You mentioned the prosecutor. Did they catch the thief?

I think for anyone who arrives with a trailer and wrecker to steal a tractor, there is nothing that can stop him. Chains can be cut. Remove a tire? Nope, he'll drag it onto the trailer. I cannot think of any way to defeat this type of thief.

I also wish the prosecutors would go for the guys who buy tractors at impossibly low prices. Unless they are absolute morons, they know a tractor is hot under the conditions that you describe. The fact that the guy in your story immediately put it up for sale makes him a fence in my mind. I sure hope he gets none of his money back.

Yes they caught the thief. It seems he is involved in some other stuff. I am letting the courts take care of the matter. You are right, with wrecker and trailer, hard to stop them.

I reckon the first guy that bought a $4000 (or whatever) motorcycle for $500 was dishonest if not a crook.

A friend of mine, typically a good honest person, let his morals slip a number of years ago and found some guy selling really nice new video cameras out of the back of his car for $200. He knew he was doing the wrong thing when he bought one, but really crossed the line when he bought two. Got home and opened the perfectly shrink wrapped boxes to find bricks inside. The moment he saw the brick, he knew. Poetic justice.

But no, I'm not saying that someone who purchases a used item on good faith is a crook. But in reality, too good to be true is always too good to be true. I suspect everyone on this list knows when it smells fishy. But when it seems hot, looks hot and the seller seems like a thief and looks like a thief, and someone still buys from him and then puts the item up for sale for a profit. In my book, well, he's a fence by definition.

And maybe losing his money is punishment enough but if I were a prosecutor, I'd still scare the living dickens out of him.

He had a wrecker and trailer. This is not the property I live on, but a 60 acre piece about 2 miles from my house. This road dead ends into my property.

It is now in the hands of the sheriff's office and prosecutor.

a couple weeks ago the media showed a survelience video of someone stealing a highway roller, as he backed it onto a trailer behind his F-350;; it resulted in the arrest of a construction contractor who apparently ran his business with stolen equipment. They recovered several peices of equipment that had been stolen over the past few years.

If they want something badly enough, they're going to get it; most thieves are lazy though or they'd go earn the money to buy it themseves. I try to make it as difficult as possible.

I can attest to the fact that low morals are not exclusive to the USA, far from it. I was talking about getting a UTV and someone i know actually suggested we get a stolen one cheap. We ahve the ideal property steep undeveloped hillsides on both sides, a locked front gate, and backed up by a neighbor in the back, they said no one would ever know. They actually said how ideal it would be to simply buy and use stolen equipment. My jaw hit the floor! No thank you, we do a lot of jerry rigging to keep things going but supporting the thieving industry is where I and my husband draw the line. I mean really! I won't say who suggested this, but whenever I see the person it is always at the forefront of my mind. I could never sleep at night buying stolen property.
