Just know that recumbent bikes can be kinda tricky at a stop.
If/when you start to topple you can't "put a foot down" in quite the same way as you can from a "regular" bike.

You are essentially half way on your back - think this through, a 10 (now 24, 27 or some HUGE number) speed may be a MUCH better idea.
Less to learn, you learned it all as a kid, etc.

Not saying you can't learn to save it in a potential topple, just that you will have a new recovery skill to learn.
We're talking recumbent EXERCISE bikes here....they are stationary.

I'm sure glad, you responded, Wayne, because I couldn't figure out what in the world he was talking about, and now I know.

The recumbent exercise bike is alot easier on the back. That's what I use because of a back injury.

I haven't had knee replacment. I have had knee surgery ( couple yrs ago) I don't know the name of the mfg. of the bike they had me to ride during therapy but, it looked like something like this bike

Wayme,
I hope all goes well for you durning your recovery. I have a close friend that went through total knee replacment about a yr ago. It seems like it took forever for him to recover because, he was/is very active and he wasn't able to do alot of things that he use to do for quite some time..

Ken, thanks for the sentiments. I first injured this knee when I was 16 or 17....so it has been on the way downhill for 45 years. Two prior surgeries on it. I am now 18 days post-op and have less pain in it than I had for the past three years. I am walking, a bit unsteadily, without walker or cane the past two days. I can already do steps better than I have been able to for probably a decade. Looks like 99% upside to me. Of course, I give the credit and praise for my recovery to God. Now I need to work on endurance, as I had become very close to non-ambulatory prior to this surgery.

Our NordicTrack has the full seat and backrest on it, and I really think that's what I want to get. I have low back pain as it is, and I fear a standard bicycle type seat and narrow back will not be as good. I like the looks of the one Bird got, but I want a step-through (otherwise I'd stick with the NordicTrack). This is why I'd like to hear from some folks who own or use a recumbent stationary bike to see what they think about their model.

My thanks to all who offer, and have offered, information to help me with this.

:thumbsup:We first rode our Schwinn 230 in an exercise room at a hotel in Memphis. I say that to say that it is a fairly substantial bike. We both liked it so much that we stopped and bought one on the drive home. That was 3 years ago and it still looks new and we love it. We have it set up with a small flat screen TV and a fan to blow on us while we ride. I was going to post a picture but you can just google Schwinn 230 and get a lot of information. The seat is very comfortable and if you hold on to the handle bars the heart monitor works well. I have 2 different types of recumbent bikes that I used to ride on the road but after having too many friends get hit by cars I have decided that it is best to either stick with dedicated biking trails or the Schwinn. My wife is 5'2" and I am 6'. It is easy for me to adjust the seat for each of us but I need to get down on one knee to do it. I am not so sure how easy that would be for you after your surgery. It is the step through model like you are interested in and I think the price is in the range you are talking about. If you have any questions I can help with please ask.

For some ODD reason I have always regarded any "bike" that doesn't have a motor as an "Exercise" bike.
So, you seem to be talking EXCLUSIVELY about the indoor things that I see at yard sales - after having spent many years in the laundry room, just a language problem.
Gottit, they only topple when loaded on one side with heavy wet sweaters that can't be put in a heated dryer, e.g. "natural" wool.

:laughing:Yep, you've got a good point. I think Craigslist and ebay have plenty of them, along with treadmills.

My dad has had both his knees replaced and a big part of his recovery was riding a recumbant bike. He went in a coupld times a week, but he also went to the gym and rode every day. His recovery was ahead of schedule becaue he pushed himself beyond what he was told to do. At first, he couldn't go ten minutes, but when they told him to ride half an hour, he rode an hour, then he worked his way up to two hours.

I bought a Schwinn Recumbant bike based on the reviews that I read on all the bikes that I could find. I've had mine about a year and a half now and I ride it half an hour almost every night. 5 times a week for sure. It sits in front of my TV, and after I eat dinner, I go ride while watching a show.

Thanks Eddie. The 240 is at the top of my list right now, my only concern being the comfort of the bicycle type seat versus a chair type seat. Anything at all you would change about your 240?
