I kind of like the golfball idea, but I think you'd need to remove the sending unit.

And they might rattle around a bit, but maybe the noise wouldn't be too bad.

And you could always tip the tractor upside down and shake it to get them out.

Seriously though, you could probably get them out with mechanical fingers, or maybe even a vacuum cleaner.

All are good ideas... :) I have an old MTD mower with about a 3 gallon milky clear tank, and I might use that. I don't like keeping fuel around for multi years, no matter what you dump in it to try to keep stuff from growing. Only have to extend a couple hoses and make a mount/guard for it. I thought about just using it as a fuel tank, but it's getting too hard to stand up/balance on the front left tire while horsing around a five gallon can on top of a funnel....

Just me but before I went to those lengths I would sell the tractor if it wasn't getting enough use to keep the fuel fresh. By the way I always liked the 2440 and is one of the reasons I bought a new 60hp 4520. Sixty hp is a good size for lots of things.
