Relieving Pressure in FEL Hoses

Jim your right pressures do indeed build quickly as the ambient temperature increases or the sun beats down on the parked loader or backhoe cylinders. It's pretty easy to deal with it though if you expect the problem upfront.

It's a bear however if you ignore the problem and try to make the connection under pressure.

It can be more serious than that. The pressure can be high enough to inject hydraulic fluid under the skn. This tends to cause gangrene. Hydraulic fluid is nasty stuff.

John Deere has a warning in their manual that, if this happens, you must seek a doctor immediately, who has experience in surgically removing hydraulic fluid from your tissues. Failure to get immediate nmedical attention can result in some massive necrosis.

They have a hotline number in the manual to find a knowledgable physician in your area.

Relieving the pressure in a disconnected FEL hose probably would not cause any harm to skin. Now hoses under pressure from the pump, well that's a different story.

Don't take the chance!
Hydraulic fluid is some nasty stuff...

Best thing is to get a solid place for your bucket so it won't move while sitting. And even then you may run into some trouble. There was times I had to take the ends off to get the pressure out. I hit the end so hard against the loader I even dented up the tit.

The issue is not so much the toxicity of the fluid as the damage caused to the cells by the pressure. The cells get squished into a pulp. You can get the same type of injury and its just as serious if you get injected by high pressure clean water from a pressure washer or latex paint from an airless sprayer.

The dead tissue can go quite deep. Its also hard to determine how much damage there is and where it all is. That dead tissue is perfect for growing nasty stuff. Growing nasty stuff deep in your tissues is bad for your health.
