If the guns are sound, you will be OK with regular pressure .38 Specials, just not the +P load. A friend of mine had one made in the 50's he shot with the . 38 Special hollow points.

Those old Colts would get out of time, so you might want to check them or have a gunsmith look at them.

Thanks Triple R I will go take those loads out ..they are +P , I was worried about that..I will go back to the standard cartridges..I appreciate it...

Brin, I am going to back up 3R here, if they are not rated for +P or +P+ and none of the older guns are, then I would not use +P fodder in them. There are plenty of good standard pressure hollow point rounds available that would be safe in them. Not saying that the revolver would fly apart with a +P round in it but why stress it when you don't have to and it is not designed for it. Nice standard pressure/velocity rounds will have better recoil control, less flash, and don't beat your gun up.

Those are some nice old guns. There were several variations the Police Positive and Police Positive Special as well as others. I had one of the last really good quality Colt Detective Specials made and it was as smooth as butter.

Thanks KOUA and TripleR.....I think my 38 Police Special is very tight...when I hold it and squeeze the trigger and hold it down and then try and twist the cylinder ..there is no free play at all.. I got this revolver from Dad years ago and I had it nickle plated ..it is a nice light gun but still with a 4 inch barrel very accurate. I will go buy some standard 38 hollow points...I hope no burglars show up until I get the new ammo...

Sounds like you are in good shape then, you can tell when they are not indexing well, I have a Python I need to get timed, but don't have a gunsmith I trust close by.

Like James said, a few +P rounds isn't going to blow it up, just cause accelerated wear. I have run some through a couple of old guns without problems, so if the boogers come to get you before you make your ammo run, just tell them to give you a minute to load up.

Yeah that is a hot powder H110 a little goes a long ways! I use it in 30 carbine it needs to be right on not over not under. You are lucky you saw it!

I had a buddy over reloading .45 ACP for himself on my 550 once and he apparently double charged one and I happened to be the guy who fired it in his 1911.

Man that was a stiff recoil!!! I was surprised by it to say the least it busted the slide clear across the top and down all but 1/8" at the dust cover was all that help the slide from hitting me in the face.

The hammer hit the bottom of the beaver tail dip hard enough it made deep marks in it. He sent the gun in and had it rebuilt and still has it. Lucky there was something left to send in and me still being healthy.

I have got a question for you fellas....I have 2 older 38 cal. police specials...one with a 4 " barrel and a snub nose...the one with the 4 " barrel must be over 60 yrs. old but in excellent condition the other, the snub nose is probably 30 yrs. old...Can I fire the new 38 cal. hollow points in these pistols or do I need to stick with just standard 38 cal. ammo ? thanks..

I would NOT use .38 +P in either of those revolvers.
Standard pressure hollowpoints woould be OK.

12 gauge loaded with buckshot is a better choice for that use.
