I don't know about your part of the country, but in my area Memorial Day is slowing loosing its meaning to political correctness and inclusiveness. A teacher told my son's class that the day honors everyone who has died not just veterans. Since apples don't fall far from the tree, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif my 12 year old son spoke up and told the teacher that she was wrong /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif to which she replied that everyone has the right to observe the day as they see fit... to which my son replied "yeah, because a lot of men died so that you could have that right".

My boss' daughter is in Caleb's class and he told us about it the next day. When we asked Caleb about it, he shrugged and said "somebody had to say something".

Farmwithjunk said it very well " <font color="blue">think about those folks who aren't here. The ones that laid down their lives so we can live free and comfortable. This is about them. Enjoy in their honor.

I think about them every day. I think about the folks in our fire fighter community that were lost in 9/11. As a volunteer Fire Fighter, active on 9/11, I think about that every time the clock turns 9:11, or I see the number in an address, phone number ect.

Many have gone before us here in the US so that we might live as we do. They deserve the utmost respect.

I will be working this weekend- in my wood shop making flag display cases for two friends that recently lost thier husbands- both vets. Glad to do it! I've made quite a few over the years, starting with one for my MIL- which now sets on a shelf in our living room.

Enjoy the weekend, but remember.....

Boy Scouts are one of the only organizations who can officially retire a US flag. When our Troop does, it is one of the very few times that I know of that 11-18 year old kids fall in to complete and respectful silence.

Every time, there are folks that tear up. It is an honor to to do this, and that honor and respect shows in the ceremony, and the individual words of respect given as the flag is retired.

Many of the flags have been flown till they were tattered, by Vets and families who have lost loved ones in the service of the US.

Every time we do a retirement, I think about those who have gone before us to give us the fredoms we have, those who are in the field now, and those who will continue. It always reminds me of this holiday, and the respect it should be given.

Robert,

Do you remember Senator Alan Cranston? I'm not sure of the spelling.

When I made Eagle Scout, he sent me the Nations flag that was flown that day!!!

Every year our troop would join with the vetrans and put out the flags. They provided the flags and we would place them at the headstones of the graves.

It was actually allot of fun, not to mention interesting to read the headstones. To this day, I still enjoy reading headstones.

re: reading headstones. Spouse & I did the cemetery thing yesterday. Went to the maternal parents plot and first thing she noticed was my Grandmother's Navy rank (WWI) outranked my Grandfathers Army rank (WWI). Somewhat unusual to see two military headstones on one couples plot. It's good to see all the flags flying over the graves.

Yep, we visited the cemetery in Oklahoma where my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. are buried; some veterans, some not, and there were lots of flags on display when we got there.

A lot of people still realize what the military means to us, despite the "politically correct" wave that seems to be sweeping the nation. I belong to a country club with many well-to-do members. My oldest son, Aaron was to join us for dinner at the club on his first leave from the Marine Corps. When he walked into the restaurant in his Dress Blues, all 200 people that were there stood up and clapped for about 5 minutes to show their appreciation and how proud they were of him....I'll never forget how proud I was that moment...for the rest of my life.
God Bless all of them, past and present.
