Remember your first car?

Have any of you ever noticed that when you drive by the Highschool parking lots, you don't see any cars or trucks older than maybe 5 years. most of them a newer and more expensive than what I can afford today.

I just get ticked when I see kids in my town driving around in really nice old 4x4 jeeps, bronco's and scouts. One family has enough dough to buy their twin sons brand new HUMMERS one red and one white. They have had them for a year now and both are pretty ragged out, niether has been offroad as far as I can tell.

s1120,
I couldn't agree with you more. These parents that buy their kids a new $20, some odd thousand doller vehicle, are, In my mind, doing there children a great diservice. Very few of them will ever have the respect and the understanding for what it takes to be able to buy and own such a vehicle. Therefore they will never take care of it.
Nobody I grew up with ever took real good care of their first car, we were to busy racking up the miles and feeling free.
I think a persons first vehicle should be paid for buy the driver to be, with money they earned. If the parents want to pitch in a little to be sure it is a SAFE car, that I can accept.
To set a child up with a good foundation of respect, ethics and morals, they need to understand how to work and work honestly for what they want. Giving them everything is just setting them up for dissapointment when they enter the Real World. Of course there are a lot of kids with wealthy parents that will never have a clue what the Real World is like. Funny how a trust fund can do that to some people.
Just my honest opinion, either that or I'm jealous !!!
Wow, I sure dragged this thread of it's path, sorry about that.

Thats a big pevee of mine. Why have a big 4wd if you are not going off road??? Come on, get some dirt, some trail pinstriping[scraches] on it, dire I say it, a dent!!!!

s1120, I know exactly what you mean my jeeps end up muddy for most of the year with fishing season, turkey season, deer season, and then trailriding. If your gonna have a 4x4 use it

totally agree!!!
And that's why I remember the lessons of paying off my first 2 cars after they'd gone to the auto graveyards.
2 lessons never forgotten:
1) understand your equipment, its limitations and its proper maintenance
2) other people will not treat your property as well as you will

I've not only noticed the better cars in the students lots (as opposed to the teachers) ... but have noticed how much worse the kids drive today. Can you imagine us, in our first cars, curring off others (like illegally turning a corner on a red light in front of oncoming traffic) and then giving the people you cut off the finger?

The utter lack of respect and knowledge of consequences is the disservice that these parents are bequething the generations to come.

His dad still doesn't speak to me

Why, 'cause his son's an idiot?

Most of the 4x4's I've seen kids driving couldn't be taken off road anyway. They put them little bitty short tires on them and lowering kits so the darn things only run 2 inches off the ground. Waste of a prefectly capable vehicle.

I've always wanted to hook my truck up with noe of those sound systems though. That way when I'm at a traffic light and I've got the whomp-whomp-whomp next to me, I could play banjo music real loud. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif That should annoy them!

I got this from one of my magazines concerning the little Japanese hot rod phenomenon;

Cutting My Springs

We don't know how things are in the rest of the country, but here in good ol' Southern California, kids driving slammed-to-the-ground, wind-up compact cars that ride on rubber-band tires and sport options like two foot tall graphics, indiscernible hieroglyphics, and wings as tall as the Sears Tower are about as abundant as fleas on a stray pooch (did I mention six point roll cages made entirely of PVC pipe?). We're not sure exactly who wrote these endearing lyrics, but they're too funny not to pass along.....enjoy.

(Sung to the tune of My Favorite Things)

Bright bluish fog lights and big yellow stickers
Turn up the volume my headlights will flicker
I think I look cool from attention I bring...
Scraping the speed bumps from cutting my springs.

Large yellow shift lights on auto transmissions
Speakers so loud that you'll scream in submission
My car really flies 'cause it has this big wing...
But nothing compares to me cutting my springs.

When the bull stops, when the money talks, when I might lose face...
I suddenly remember what my car can't do...and then I refuse to race!

Day-glow orange shift knobs and whiteface temp gauges
Low-profile tires make me think I'm courageous
Japanese characters, who knows what they mean?
They're part of the package from cutting my springs.

Coffee-can mufflers and Calvin is peeing
People around me don't like what they're seeing
They're all just so jealous, for I am the king...
I rule the street after cutting my springs!

When the night falls, when the girls leave, while I can't wait...
If I'm such a stud after cutting my springs...Why can't I get a date?

I keep this on my refrigerator, hope you all liked it.

Mine was a 1961 Triumph TR-3. No top, just a tonneau cover. Wire wheels, British racing green.....that thing always had something wrong with it, but it was all mine for $175.00. Since it was hardly ever driveable, my first REAL car was a 1967 Mustang GT, 390, 4 spd., no power anything. Put an 8-track in it and I was in heaven.........3rd fastest car at my high school. (don't ask me how I know).
