Case IH 1140 (first tractor ever)
I am looking to buy a used tractor. Sometimes when I look at an ad they sometimes say that the have 2 or 3 remotes? What is that all about?

Usually hydraulic remotes for external hydraulic implements. Or some use a remote for a hydraulic top link, or 3pt link to level/unlevel something attached to the 3pt. usually when talking about "a remote" there are a pair of connections, the pair would give hydraulic power in both directions. A single would give power one way, think of your 3pt, power up, gravity down.

They are usually standard on larger tractors, nice on smaller, and can be added to even the smallest 3pt equiped tractors. I don't have them on my L, and from reading it would be expensive to add.

Good Luck,
Rob

My Mahindra 5525 has triple remotes

Mine were installed by my dealer when I bought the tractor last March ($750 parts and labor).

You need remotes to handle implements that have hydraulic cylinders, like my hay baler (Massey Ferguson 124) to raise and lower the hay pickup

DSCF0275Small.jpg

and my sicklebar mower (an Allis Chalmers 80T) to raise and lower the cutter bar

.

Currently I'm adding a hydraulic cylinder to my restored Minneapolis Moline P3-6 grain drill to rainse and lower the seeding mechanism

The brackets for the hydraulic cylinder are C-clamped and need to be welded. I'll do that as soon as I finish constructing that pole frame equipment shed visible in the background.

Thanks for the picture. It explains alot. Beautiful place by the way

Yep, near Cypresswood and 45. My little L is up at Elkhart, in the middle of Crockett and *********.

My 3 sets of remotes are a home made set up.
Although they're not as nice as flusher's set of remotes, mine are serviceable. He got a great deal from his dealer, but you can also do it yourself for a little less cost. I bought the 3 spool valve, hoses, connections and QD's for under $400 (approx). I made my own brackets.

That looks like a good job to me. What is QD's

Sorry about that. Was rearranging the photobucket album and mess up the links.

I noticed on our tractor that the hose coming out of our remote and snakes back to the belly mower is a little tight. I found where it actually comes in contact with the body and has rubbed a spot onto the hose. Should I replace the hose or just put a larger hose on that spot to protect it?

Also there is a little valve in between the quick connect and the end of the hose. Whats that all about?

I suspect that the valve is what shortened the hose. I did play like a mechanic for about 6 years for used car lots in my youth, so I am not helpless but I have no background or knowledge in hydraulics and such.

If just the outer rubber is worn, then you have a few miles left in it-but if the steel braiding is wearing through that a new hose should sourced sooner rather than later.

I suspect that the valve has a little internal leakage, and the valve was/is used to keep the mower deck up because it was drifting down. Might want to ask the previous owner about that to confirm.

I noticed that the deck would settle down to the lower posisition after it sat over night. I didnt think much about that because I decided to set it down when I shut the tractor off and get off of it. I began doing that because I step on it on the way down and it doesnt move around if I have it lowered to the ground. So, if that was a quick fix, what should I do to fix it correctly?

There is probably nothing you can do short of replacing the valve, and that will be expensive!

Flusher:

That's why I like flat fenders as they make it easy to mount such things as remotes and tool boxes. That's a clean and reasonably priced setup your dealer did for you.

I've been wanting a 3pt log splitter, but don't have remotes. Is it really +/- $400 to add them? a local guy here was making it sound like it was a cheap add. Then again, maybe that is "cheap" to him. :D

/ Remote Question #17
Tony,
With a log splitter, if you have QD's form the pump and sump say like to and from your loader valve, you could stick the log splitter lines right in there. Your log splitter should have it's own valve on it. That's how I run our log splitter off Loretta's tractor.
Just be sure to make the connections to the log splitter or back to the loader valve before you start the tractor so as not to "dead head" the pump.

Ok, I now understand what the remote is. Why do some people need 3? How much stuff can you operate at once?

For something like a box blade with hydraulic scarifiers and a Top-N-Tilt. One valve extends/retracts the top link to adjust cutting angle, one valve extends/retracts the side link for adjusting tilt on the box, one valve raises/lowers the scarifiers. Other equipment may require more than one hydraulic cylinder as well.
