Removing large pins: Anyone use one of these???

Anyone out there use one of these flat-head bits with their pneumatic, hand-held air hammer for removing large, stuck backhoe pins and similar:

Am I on the right track here? Or should I stick with the old sledge hammer and dowel method?

Or does someone have an even better approach???

What you really want is some kind of sideways arbor press. I suppose you could rig one up w/ a porta-power kit and some welding...

I'd love to know what the CAT etc. service trucks use. I'm 6' 240# & only have so many sledge swings in me before I loose "power".

To answer your question, I have used an air hammer to drive pins out. The attachment you show looks good in that it shouldn't damage the pin.

I have used an air hammer in many cases and they work ok. It's really stuck you might still need the big boy.

I have used pneumatic tools before but not with that particular tool. I would think it would work well but Im still in the dark ages using a masonry hand held sledge and a 3/4" brass bar for beating on bolts and pins ! You might try some of my favorite juice " Liquid Wrench" and possibly some heat also !

This is what we use to drive drift pins, or bolts out of holes. They call it a B&O. One guy holds the B&O the other hits the end with a sledge hammer.

I think your statement is right on the money. I would LOVE to stow-away in the Milton CAT repair facility with a camera and see what they use. You've got to know that it is NOT a big funky yellow sledge hammer!!!

The "big boy"??? I've got a Bosch Brute-style electric jack hammer... which actually works amazingly well by the way... but I've got no flat bit or guide or any other way to keep it centered on a pin working horizontally.

Or did you just mean my sledge hammer???

Well, I certainly tried to loosen up some pins on the rockscape job... ...but some are still holding on quite tightly!!! Liquid Wrench is very cool... but like Hazmat, there are only so many swings in me! And I am not 6', 240!!! I'm a lot closer to 5', 240!!!

A very interesting tool Ed. I'd never seen one before in all my construction days. On the other hand, what does one do when there is no "other guy" around (preferably 6", 240) to do the hitting or holding???

That's when you invite a friend over for a beer. After he has had a sip ask him to hold the B&O, make sure you tell him that it will only take a minute and it usually doesn't hurt.
