Removing large pins: Anyone use one of these???

Actually, I was in Harbor Freight the other day, and I saw that side sledge thingy in their percussion section, though I didn't ask about the price, so I couldn't tell you about that. The hammer with the long bill is, however a must have. Note that you don't use the hammer with the long bill as a hammer. Think of it as a drift pin with a handle. You hold the long billed hammer against the pin, and hit it with the BFH! Allows you to control the point of impact better and worry less about flattened thumbs!:D :D

Sounds like it's time for another road trip down to Warwick, Rhode Island... my closest HF store. Believe it or not, I am actually more concerned at this point about removal of the backhoe bucket tooth pins. Those suckers are really in there good!!! :D

I think I will make one of those on my lathe. :) My old shoulders won't take the pounding of a hammer anymore! I can see for my stuff here that would be an asset. I have several different bits but not as large as that would be

Interesting... albeit slightly over the top... video. I would like one of these just to change bucket teeth! :D It would be interesting to try it out on pivot pins as well, but I'll bet it isn't a cheap tool to buy.

I wonder if they can be rented somewhere to try out first???

Your right... not exactly cheap.... 4 - 500 to buy a basic set of the yellow colored ones..... depending on which tips you want...

I would love to buy one too, but out of my price range for the amount I would use it.... on the plus side, I can take home one of the demo models anytime I need to use it. :)

But you don't / can't apply the same amount of force that you do with a sledge either. The thing that gives you the accuracy, takes away the mechanical advantage of a sledge.

The increased arm of the sledge gives you additional impact.

While they are neat, and I would certainly use one where appropriate, do not think that they will develop the same hit that you can with a sledge.

I instantly thought about making one. But the impact surfaces have to the right steel and hardened or they will mushroom and or bulge .
I think a very large percentage of force is lost due to poor alignment as with sledge and hand held punch. So I think the slide hammer would work well.
