Removing marble tile off floor (how to)

Richard,

I've done some tile removal jobs, but never marble. I'm guessing it will be similar though.

Lots of tools work at poping off the tiles. I like a wonder bar myself. Just line up the short edge along the bottom of the tile, give it a wach with a hammer and see what happens. Sometimes the whole tile will pop off, sometimes you just get a piece of it.

Wear eye protection!!!!

I've never tried an air chisel, but see where it might work better. If you don't have one, it's too small a job to justify buying one.

Once the buld of the tile is off, go back with a cold chisel to get of the high spots.

For cleaning off the remaining mastic, first try a scraper. If it comes off easy, your lucky. Next try the chisel and hammer. If that doesn't work, get some wire wheels for your drill, or if you have a 4 inch grinder, get a wire wheel for that.

The wire wheel is a last resort, but will take off the mastic to smooth concrete. It's dusty, painful and tedius. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Why not rent a floor tile stripper? They're made to do this.
They look like an upright vacuum but have a 6-8" wide blade that vibrates back-and-forth and separates the tile from the adhesive.
