Given I've got a picture, this is more than 1,000 words!
Item on the left is a simple 90 degree sheet metal boot, round connection from flex to round part (rectangular part to fit the size of rectangular diffuser), then the item on the right is a plaster frame, which the boot connects to.

Is this what you have?

Also keep in mind you don't have 10" to work with you have the depth of the joist space + the 5/8" of sheetrock you will be putting up. As long as nothing extends past the visible surface of the sheetrock you will be fine. I've had to do this in some tight spaces and had to trim a little bit off the bottom edge of the elbow with snips, that was at least 23 years ago and I never heard that it failed.

Got two more pictures in place.
You can see how it's currently hanging. They used that brace to hold it up. When I push it up, I have a couple inches of over hang. I figure I can trim that down so I'm not terrified by it, just another bump in the road. If however, I made it straight, I could avoid that and box it in.

Bring duct into the wooden box, then cut a hole in the bottom for the output side.
Don't bring conditioned air into a wooded box. What you want made up is a insulated metal box that you can tap into to move the air where you want it to.

Keep in mind, this could affect your airflow as I'm assuming your bringing in the air from the main trunk duct.

"Plaster Frame"

Thank you!!! Now that I can search on that, I've found it and that is it.

Metal box might be interesting...as I've not nothing to make it from (could probably go to HVAC guys that did this, they might be able to fabricate and I install)

Anyway, this is pulled from the trunk line that goes to 'that side' of the house. It's the end of the road for this room. This room is going to be the 'mud room' where the wife wants to store things in the huge closet at end of room (full width of room and 8' doors....room is 9')

Anyway, she's calling this her "she room" so we had it conditioned verses cold. It is on corner of house so has two external walls and a third wall is adjacent to (conditioned) garage.

and have found a 6" plaster frame now that I know what to look for.... so my options are starting to increase!

Gotta love the depth of this website.

Metal insulated boxes generally are custom made (you will find some supply houses that keep standard sizes in stock), insulated on the inside with duct liner. You cut into them, use a tab collar and then connect round pipe or flex from them to help you move the air. Downside is depending on why you need the box, it will reduce airflow.

I didn't read the mud room part (as to what this new structure was). Kind of 6 of one half dozen of the other per conditioning the space vs the money.

Another thought would be to call the HVAC contractor and ask them if they can come out and put a round register in instead. It wasn't uncommon for us to get all of our duct in and have someone call and ask if we can move something, if you're nice and not a pest most guys will come knock it out when they're in the area. I don't know what deal you had with the contractor but we always went back and placed registers and installed our grilles once the sheetrock was up and painted.
It will be helpful to them if you already have measurements and pictures with a good explanation of what you're wanting to do.

They'd probably come out free of charge (though I don't know that) We bought two systems from them.

None the less....I think I'll 'punt'. I think I'll just mount some 2x4 on the joist to move it out and give me a good nail surface. I'll need to trim some of the height/depth off to tuck it in under the height of the drywall so I'll just put some 2x4's on the side to bring it out, then maybe add another 2x4 at the 'head' of it as not only another nailing surface but I can use it to measure the cut to match up with the drywall.

I've got the wood to mount it, I've got the saws to cut it, I've got the screws to mount it. I'll have it done before tomorrow's game starts!!

yeah, I know it should only take me 10/20 minutes now that I've got a game plan. Heck, probably take me longer to pull the saw out and get it setup than it will to mount it. Trimming it down though will take some more thoughtful effort. I do have some tin-snips.
