I leave mud wasps to themselves too.

Sure, but a few seconds with a garden hose cleans it out with no trouble.My issue with daubbers is that you can't leave a bolt-hole open for any length of time without them plugging it up.
That sounds more like a leaf cutter bee. In my experience, mud daubers (and bees) are rather particular about the size hole that they want.I've had those mud wasps fill the key hole on my tractor. Clean it out - spray it full of WD-40.
