Removing Skunk from a Spring Trap

I set live traps all the time for raccoons in my barn but sometimes get a skunk. Have a local guy that will come get them for 20 bucks. He just takes a large canvas tarp holding it up in front of him and slowly walks over and gently warps it around the trap, picks it up and loads it I his truck. He stated he has been during it this way for 25 yrs and never had one spray. I am still not confident enough to try, so I just call him. Plus, what do I do with it after I wrap it. I like bury the whole thing idea.

I did that with a live trap. If the skunk saw me, it would turn and raise its tail. Hide behind the tarp and it looked away. Peak out, turns its tail. Hide and it looked away. Pretty comical. It knew darn well I wasn't going to mess with it. So I slowly put the tarp over the trap, then lifted it up and carried it to the back yard. Carefully opened it through the tarp. Pulled the tarp and ran like heck! Skunk ran the other way a bit, looked at me with its tail up, then waddled into the woods like it owned the place.... IT DID as far as I was concerned! :laughing:

But in the OP's trap, its dead, so just man up and get it out of there.

I once caught 4 skunks at once in my live trap...momma and three babies..No problem except for the 4 outside the trap :smiley_aafz:

Most country boys used to go skunk hunting back during the depression. My father in law said he used to skin them under water in the creek. I think he said he got .20 cents a hide for them. Big money in those days. All the boys that had been skunk hunting had to sit at the rear of the class in school, wonder why.

I use a setting tool to set, or release anything, on these traps. You don't have to actually touch the critter that way.


You can buy them, or simply make one. Mine is a couple of pcs of 1/4" x 3/4" flat bar with a notch ground in the ends, and a hole/bolt about 1/3 from the notched end as a pivot point (like a pair of scissors).

You could do like they do on CSI and put some Vick's VapoRub under your nose.

What's wrong with wearing a mask with the proper filter.

I kill & relocate dead skunks quite often here. Never trapped one. I wear surgical gloves, put the beastie in a plastic bucket, load this in the ATV and take the skunk to a remote location on the property. The coyotes will dispose of the skunk. Tried deep burial once - the coyotes found it, dug it up and ate it anyhow. If you are close enough to the skunk that his spray smells sweet - you will also be smelling like a skunk for a while. I just live with it.

Its only when you are "involved" with one still alive and can feel his spray falling on you - as a damp mist - that its probably best that you take a shower - or two.

Its funny but skunk smell has never bothered me. Its chemically closely related to onion smell and it just doesn't affect me at all. Sorry I don't live closer or I would drop by to help.

Wait a minute..... DrRod, isn't that you that has a thread about a smell in the corner of your cabin??? If skunk odor doesn't bother you, that cabin must be REALLY BAD!!!

The neighbor's son set a trap in a small shed and didn't tell his Dad about it. Dad goes in there with his German Shepard and both got sprayed good by a skunk. They had a problem for a while. Lots of baths and trying different things.

If you have a live skunk in a trap just shoot it in the lungs with a .22 short and it won't spray.
