Removing Skunk from a Spring Trap

The neighbor's son set a trap in a small shed and didn't tell his Dad about it. Dad goes in there with his German Shepard and both got sprayed good by a skunk. They had a problem for a while. Lots of baths and trying different things.

If you have a live skunk in a trap just shoot it in the lungs with a .22 short and it won't spray.

I've shot a dozen skunks in the lungs and none of them have sprayed. They still smell horrible, but they don't spray. I read about this in a hunting magazine.

I read about it too back in the 80s. I tried it with the next few I caught, and they all sprayed. There’s a reason most trappers use a syringe.

Same here. Maybe our Ohio skunks are more tenacious than those skunks in that state up North. Much like the football teams. :D

Maybe you're too close when you shoot them. I shoot them with a rifle from about 60 feet. They don't know where it comes from or what hit them.

Tried that too. Same result.

My gran'pa used to trap skunks.
He'd drape the cage with an old piece of tarp and carry the cage at arms length down to the waterfront to drown them.
He never did get sprayed, and skunks did not swim well in the cage.

That's a cage trap. And a tarp works for that, as I've done it myself and let it go without getting sprayed. A spring trap, I doubt you'd get close enough to throw a tarp over the animal. Even if you did, as soon as it felt the tarp it would probably spray. And drowning an animal ain't too humane.
