So far removing the pump has defeated my every attempt. I now have the JD401C Technical Manual and Fig 44 shows the pump being held on the gear by a hex nut. I examined the housing and noted that the plate the pump is attached to is held to the engine case by 5 bolts. I removed the bolts but found that something that cannot be clearly seen is holding the plate to the engine case. What am I missing here. If I remove the nut and washer there is a risk of losing one or both inside the engine. Perhaps it does not matter at this point as the engine must be overhauled. However, it will be reassembled (hopefully) in the future. PumpFig44.jpgBolts1.JPGPump1.JPG

To remove inj pump nut & drive gear one needs to remove cover(item 6) held on by 2 bolts.

Is that a weldment of some kind in the lower corner of that plate? No idea, but looks like something built up there, and maybe holding the plate tight. ??

After closely inspecting wukung's photo he has correct inspection cover removed PLUS some bolts that secure timing gear cover(key 2 my photo) to front of engine.

WU.. that manual isnt going to help much.. YOUR PUMP is a CBC.. the pump showing in the manual page is a DB.!!
U have the correct cover removed.. its just a matter of finding the correct ALLEN SCREW SOCKET to remove the 3 screws.. that hold the pump drive to the gear..
DID U TIME THE PUMP..?? THATs very important..

Sort of getting to the pump. I've gotten the front off the tractor and I want to remove the engine to rebuild. I have removed 2 each bolts (15/16 in head size from both sides of the clutch housing that bolts into the engine block. In addition 2 bolts that hold the battery box to the engine. See pictures. I cannot get the engine to budge at all from the clutch housing. Is there anything that I have missed as far as a fastener or otherwise impediment for removing the engine block. could a rusty pilot shaft be holding the engine back? Suggestions are appreciated.
