Nice job VON, and thanks to all for the info. I am real happy to hear the block should do just fine with heat/paint cocern. And I really want to try the tire paste soap--sounds perfect for making a tractor look decent and not spending forever doing needless dissasembly.

Now I do have to be honest here...my wife (who wil be the main user of this tractor for pulling the gang mowers) wants the Yanmar painted like the John Deere. Sorry folks it is going from faded and a bit rusty red/grey to new green and yellow. I'll send before and after pics in several months if y'all don't hate me now! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

To be honest... I saw a yanmar 1500 painted JD colors about a year ago. It wore them well. I also saw a ford 8n with those colors... now that was a clash...

yes the trusses were on-site fab: though I didn't put up the main structure, I'm only 1 guy with a few fair weather friends and 2 brothers who work too much to help. I had a local amish crew errect the main setup and I'm doing all the finish work myself. with 1 brothers help.

it is a rust remove info form other page. has a very cool way to remove rust! it should not effect slightly painted material only the rusty parts of it!!!! .

Me and my brother have repainted about 5 or 6 tractors.

We buy old Zetors to refurbish in winter time. On these Zetors, we usually take the bonnet and fenders off, these are sprayed red. The main tractor body is sprayed in a dark shade of green.

Because the fuel tank and dash is mounted over the steering column, we leave that in place and tape it up with old newspapers when the main tractor body is sprayed dark green. The fenders and hood are sprayed individually in the orange red colour.

The wheel rims are sprayed individually, in white colour. to prevent paint from contaminating your tires, put some grease on the edge of the tires, so that you can scrape off the grease with paint after the spraying.

When the wheels are off, we put the tractor on wooden blocks or oldfashioned milk cans. (the heavy milk cans they used 40 years ago, before tank truck transport was introduced)

We clean the whole tractor with a pressure washer, and only the sheet metal parts are grinded with sandpaper.

SPIKER and RENZE, thanks for the info. I had actually just recently found that "battery charger rust removal" a few days ago. i thought is was a neat idea myself...especially for the small parts. I wonder how well it would work in a larger tank with only a smallish charger (? whole tractor at once!?) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Hopefully today I will get out to the barn and start a bit of dissasembly.

"Pressure wash the entire machine and disassemble as little as you can."
That's exactly what I do. Then I mix some Rustoleum with paint thinner and spray whatever I'm working on. You can buy it in factory colors. I'm wondering if I should be using hardener in it too. It seems to work ok, but I'm thinking maybe the shiny finish would last longer. I just want it to look presentable from 26 feet away. Or 34 feet, I'm not fussy.
