Good for you.

Stuff a 4x4 down the pipe, drive over the top of the pipe and then connect a chain from the tractor to the 4x4. Drive forward, and you'll rip the pipe right out of the ground. MOve the chain to the pipe, then rip out the rest. Clean up the groove with your bucket, drop in a new pipe, then fill it back in.

Dang! He makes it sound so easy.

Definitely fix your culvert - you have the technology. "Good fences make good neighbors" and the same is true with drainage. Nothing worse than a washed out road.

Can't hire out or rent toys when I have the tractor... Maybe after the smoke clears.
I have been working on the ditch on that side of the driveway, but there is a good size forested valley that drains at this point. If the ditch doesn't carry enough water, it will cross the drive. I feel better replacing the pipe.
In any case the tooth bar arrives shortly, so installing that is the next project.

Thanks for the replies,

Don
Sounds like it's time to talk the wife into a new backhoe for the tractor:laughing::thumbsup:
Added an overflow to my existing culvert, a 10 about halfway up next to the old one, did it with the backhoe. After placing pipe in and covering with old gravel and adding new and grading forever seems like I still have a small depression in the driveway were the pipes cross. Can't tell you how many tons of gravel I've added.

One thing with a endloader is that is won't dig very deep on flat ground. If you can get the front wheels going downhill so to speak, you can dig really deep. Does that make any sense? In other words, you will probably have to dig the hole a little wider than you would if you use a backhoe.

I've dug up some pretty solid gravel with my BX without a toothbar, so its not necessary, but it would probably be easier, and less damage to your bucket if you had one. The trick is to break through the gravel in one spot, then you can get underneath it and under mine it easier.

You might find this interesting reading ...and, you might consider HDPE, double-walled and light enough to handle easily.

I got my tooth bar in/installed and started digging on one end of the pipe. TS Lee is heading this way and we will get anywhere from .5 to 6 inches of rain from that so I thought I would leave the driveway intact for now. As for using the ditch beside the driveway on the upper side for drainage, I guess it will get a good test! Culvert IMG_0349.jpg photo - Don Nelson photos at pbase.com
Yes, you need to dig down at an angle to get deep enough plus, once I start ripping the pipe out, dirt will be less likely to spill back into the hole, hopefully less manual shoveling. Re: Tooth bar. really helps to loosen and dig but then when I want to rake dirt back from the pipe the teeth are just in the way, as you can see by all the lose soil in this pic. The plan is to dig the rest to look like this then remove the tooth bar to clean up some.
I like the idea of a 4x4 in the pipe to help pull it up, will see what I have on hand. In fact I have a metal pipe I might use for that.

You would be a lot better off renting a mini excavator. The wife and I rented one and it took six hours for us to put in 40ft of 18" pipe and that included removing a stump that was in the way. It was well worth the money for the machine.

just some culvert fun I had a few years ago , the toothbar was a great help and to make it a one man job I needed the ATV as an anchor point pulling the clay filled culvert out

I replaced a 12" culvert pipe, about 12' long. I used a backhoe (BX22)...only thing that would break through the compacted driveway material other than a pickax (airport mix, crusher run to some). Even with a BH it was a big job. I replaced the old galvanized pipe with the double wall HDPE type. There are a number of internet sites with guidelines for properly installing a drainage culvert. Here's one of them http://hrpoa.org/Culvert Information.pdf
