Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller

Charliebrn,

I have to admit a twinge of jealousy hearing about your new tiller. I've been using a shovel most of the weekend and that's not fun./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I do have a question regarding your check chains. Do those function as sort of an inexpensive "position control"? I seem to recall some discussion of those in a recent thread. Would they work on a box blade or rear mower? This would certainly reduce the advantage of position control offered on the b2410 and larger machines.

Also, regarding your tiller, what kind of warnings does the literature give on rocks? My soil has lots of 2" dia rocks, and the occasional 4"-6" surprise. My thoughts are that it can't be good for a tiller.

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller

John, I agree, of course, if you have a driveshaft that can be put together different ways, but some (like my Bush Hog tiller) have a driveshaft that only goes together one way, so you can't accidentally screw up./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller

Good point John, and nice graphics! I've never actually shortened one so I take it there is no "key" to ensure the orientation is correct on reassembly?

BTW, when you gonna register with the board so you can get credit for all your helpful contributions? In fact, how did you pull off a signature without registering /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller

Fishman,

Actually, the tiller did spit out quite a few rocks, all under about 3" in diameter or so, and I saw no problems with the tines, even a dull edge. Maybe i got lucky??? The Rotavator came with a slip clutch on the PTO shaft, and I'm sure that if you hit a big one, it'd protect the tractor, as long as it's adjusted right (which is another thread altogether!)

The check chains keep the attachments from swinging side-to-side too much, and depending on the implement you limit that side travel to a certain degree. They don't provide for position control, which is one thing the BX lacks that I wouldn't mind having besides an hour meter.

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller

John,

The driveshaft that came with the Rotavator was made in such a way that there is only one way it'll slide together, so you can't get it wrong. I take it that not all of them are like that???? If not, thanks for the heads up...

This is just for you.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

C... i r registerd.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

But I'm on & off multiple times a day downloading drivers for customers... so It's actually quicker not to sign in and out each time...

I just "point" to my signature in unregistered mode for my "picture"... {like I did to yours}

Clear as Mud, Right?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh, yes... there is no standard PTO drive shaft, most are square... so you can be out of phase 90 degrees and you can get a real nasty {and harmful} vibration.

Before I forget, another thing when you first get that "new" PTO driven implement.... make sure of the PTO shaft clearance to prevent binding, bending, breaking/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif... slowly lift the 3-Point hitch up with the PTO shaft connected to the attachment... and watch the telescoping action of the PTO shaft, so it won't "bottom" out.

Some people size it at ground level and forget the rest...until they raise the implement off the ground and c-r-u-s-h and bend the PTO shaft in the air 'cause it's too long.../w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Re: Report:BX and 50" tiller

I recently bought a Kuhn 50" tiller for my B2410, and had to shorten the pto shaft 6". If it wasn't for the information here on TBN, I would not have known to do this, and would probably have damaged my tractor when raising the tiller.

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller/off topic

Thanks John /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I was reading an old thread on some topic I needed help with and did find you registered. That's quite an impressive arsenal of tractors you list in your profile. No wonder you've got so much good advice for us beginners. Thanks again /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

(Back on topic for a moment) I read somewhere that if you seperate the pto shaft, connect each end and lay the shaft halves side by side you can mark the length with the implement all the way down and do the same all the way up. Seems like an easy way to verify the shaft isn't too short or too long. Any guidelines for minimum insertion?

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller/off topic

Hi Rob,

Great question on minimum insertion..., but I don't have any 'Rules of thumb" for that one... I like maximum insertion better, however... to transfer all that available "tractor PTO energy" to the implement.

Back in your college automotive engineering days, what did they teach about "shear strength" and "twisting"? I can't explain it in engineering terms {just a simple farm boy here}, but... notice the difference in "shear strength" between a 3" PTO shaft overlap {aka minimum insertion /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif} and say a 30" PTO shaft overlap {maximum insertion}. How long would the min. shaft overlap last using 50 PTO hp as our reference, before the shaft would twist or shear off? How about a 30" overlap... maybe never?

See Rob, your great question raises even more.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My Dad uses my Satoh S650G... I've considered selling since they have your 790 on special. I think that 790 is one heck of a tractor for the money! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif But, then I need another tractor like the multiple holes in my head.../w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Somebody has to keep this ole economy going... I want to do my fair share./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I noticed you're a "camper"... that deserves another post...

Re: Report:BX and 50\" tiller/off topic

Boy John, you're digging up some memories for me /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I suppose with a very minimal shaft overlap the twisting load would exceed the yield strength of the outer shaft and it would split. As overlap is increased I'd expect the failure mode to switch to fatigue due to the vibrations and variations in implement load. At some point it will never fail as the loads will always be below the yield and fatigue strength.

Mechanics of Materials and Chemistry were my least favorite classes. My favorite was a clue to my current interest in tractors... I took an Ag-Engineering course on IC engines. Very little theory and we got to completely tear down and reassemble a four cylinder gasoline tractor engine. It had to run with no parts left over when we were done. My group was successful /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif One other memorable class for me was IC engine theory. Pretty dry material but we did get to run some engines on dynos. One was a medium sized Cummins turbo-diesel. I don't recall exactly what we were trying to accomplish in the test, but we got that turbo housing glowing bright red! That was cool /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Yeah, I'm pretty much loving the 790. Hard to beat the price if you don't mind gears and it's a hard working little tractor. My wife and I both prefer clutch vehicles, so it was a natural for us.

Camper... yeah, that's another post /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
