Researching zero turns

   / Researching zero turns #21
Tried out a Country Clipper today. I was intrigued by the joystick control. At first I thought it was pretty cool. After thinking about it, not so sure.

I did like the "stand up deck" though.

Overall, the Ferris is still at the top of the list.

I've had my Country Clipper since spring and am very pleased with it overall. Mine is the 60" Edge XLT w/Kawasaki 24 hp and joystick. I cut right at 6 acres every time I cut, about every 2 weeks this year. I had never operated any type of zero turn before looking to buy this spring so I fell right into the joystick operation after just a few hours on it. I can't imagine having to hold my arms up to operate the mower for hours at a time on a twin stick model mower (which you can get a CC in). Only need the one hand on mine with your arm resting on the armrest. My yard is virtually all hill with a couple of steeper banks and I have been impressed with the stability too, was worried I might be wasting my money but this mower has a decent center of gravity and as long as the grass is dry it has great traction. Main reason I went to a zero turn from my tractor w/72" finish mower is all the trimming I have - this mower saves me quite a bit of clutch work and weedeating.

The Edge XLT is the top residential model and sufficient for my needs. I plan to change the seat on it this winter, get the good Michigan suspension seat like I have on my tractor, otherwise the mower is good to go like it is. The larger, commercial models have nicer seats on them but a hefty price tag to go with it. I got a decent deal on my Edge XLT for $5400. Yes, I sure like the stand up deck for service but on the 60" deck I have a really tough time getting it up by myself so I use my FEL on my tractor to pick it up. I'll reserve judgement on the lack of grease fittings, especially the blade spindles and front axle pivot until I see how they hold up. The blade spindles are heavy cast iron and have replaceable bearings but no way to grease them. The only two grease fittings are on the front wheel spindles.
