Cyril, if it were one of the fund raising companies, it would be more like 10% going to the actual charity, but this was direct to one of the two biggest charities in the country, and they did send me a letter of apology when I called them on it.

It really gripes me when I get a call wanting donations to some police association, sheriffs association, state troopers, and such because I know they're giving that group about 10% to use their name. So I keep the caller on the line as long as possible, asking lots of questions so they don't have as much time to call other people. I don't like the fact that those groups allow their name to be used, but I'm sure not going to send them any money.

I have used "I thought you are calling from the food bank to let me know I can come to get my groceries as I'm out of work", believe it or not they still try and get you to donate! :mad:

Bird,
I was actually joking about the second hundred being to cover expenses, but I was thinking of the type of organizations you refer to.

Well, this could sound political, but it is not. It seems to me that the USPS and the US Census are joined at the hip. Earlier this year I got a letter from the US Census saying that I would soon receive my official census form.:confused: DUH! What possible good did that letter do except cost money? Then, one day a census taker drove up to my house and presented me with my official census. I told him I was expecting it in the mail because of the letter. He told me to read the letter closely and I would see that it said I would soon "receive" a census form, not that it would be "mailed" to me. Sure enough, he was right.

So, I filled out the census form and sent it back; tossed all the extra paper and the offer of employment. Last week I go to the mailbox and there is a postcard from the US Census. I figured it would be some kind of confirmation of receipt, but NO! It was telling me how returning the census was my obligation and blah, blah, blah. . . and oh by the way, if you have already returned your census form, thank you. Sheesh! How much more money are they gonna waste?:mad:

I have one better. Here the Census has been running advertisements on TV. One of the things they claim in the ads is that it is needed to determine the number of people in an area for putting in traffic signals etc. I work for a local city in the traffic signal department and can tell you that there are a whole series of federally mandated conditions which must be met to determine if a signal is warrented. The US Census has nothing to do with it. I found their claims to be shameful and embarrasing to say the least.

Ha! My wife filled out the census form while we were eating lunch in a park the other day. It took her all of 4-5 minutes. There were only 10 questions. Today on the morning news they announce that there are "Help Centers" being set up for people that are confounded by the confusing wording of the census form.... HUH??? Man, this country is doomed if you cannot fill out a form that asks, name, birthday, address, do you own, mortgage or rent your house, are you Hispanic, what race specifically are you and how many people live in your house. :mur:

rant = off

There, I feel better now. :laughing:

Rant on:
Personally, I feel that my birthday and whether I own or rent is none of their bloody business. My age possibly, but my actual birthday is irrelivent.

OK, Rant off.

When my wife started her biz, we got a call to donate to the local VFD. We did so without hesitation. In the next year, we had over 100 calls from VFD's, some over 150 miles away. Next year, told the local guy about it, he got mad when I refused to donate again. He also denied giving our number out, but somebody sure did.

Almost the same thing. Besides the TV commercials, I first got a letter from the City telling me how important the census is. Then I got the letter from the US Census telling me I'd soon receive the form. But then our form did come in the mail. I promptly filled it out and sent it back; told my wife we may be in trouble if one of us dies before April 1.:D And then, like you, I got the postcard from the US Census. They claim the extra mailings actually save money, and I have no proof either way, but it does seem odd.

Well, it's my understanding that the official count is supposed to be as of April 1, 2010. So you're supposed to count everyone who will be living at your address on that date. So if you have someone move in with you between now and April 1, he/she should be counted at your address, just as if anyone currently living there dies between now and April 1, he/she should not be counted. But of course I'm guessing a lot of folks did just as I did and sent the form back since we don't expect any change in tne next week.

Now keep in mind that I'm no census expert; that's just my understanding of the way it works.:D
