Restoration of an old Athens Offset Harrrow

/ Restoration of an old Athens Offset Harrrow #21
Here's an update. Got the Athens harrow disassembled and ready to sand blast and paint. Have new 24" smooth blades and new bearings ready to install. All is going well and it should be like new when it is finished. I expect to have about $2000 in its restoration, so probably not a bad price for a disc like this. I tend to get carried away in my restorations, and just can't do anything 1/2 way. Getting the bearings out got easier as I got experienced, and pressure washing helped a lot to get the decades old grit out of the bearing holders. All in all it is in very good shape. I can't believe how heavy it is compared to the Leinbach 20" x 20 3 point disc I have been using. I hope my tractor will pull this adequately! Here are some pix awaiting the blaster.

Lookin good:thumbsup:
Been cutting rusted nuts and bolts off my 13 ft wheel disc. Cutting it down to about 6-ft so I can pull it with my 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine). Need to relocate the lift wheel assemblies today.

What's your opinion. Do you think my 70 horse 4WD loaded rear Kubota will pull this disc adequately??

Well, general rule of them on heavier discs is 10hp per the foot.

It could all depend on what your pulling it in and how deep, but, seeing as how you put new discs on it I'm assuming you were expecting to pull deeper than what the discs on it could offer. Now me, if I were looking for an offset disc for my 70-ish horsepower tractor, I would have gone looking for 7-8 foot model. Medium weight tandem disc plow? Ten-twelve feet.

FWIW--you'll be able to pull it OK in fairly dry soil. In soft soil, maybe. My definition of "adequate" is being able to pull a disc at 5-6 mph to get it to work effectively.

Here's my old 6.5 ft Towner offset disc (18 pans, 20" size). I get it going OK with my 55 hp 2WD Mahindra 5525 when I till my hayfield in Oct when it's pretty dry after 4 months of frequent triple digit summer temps.

In soft soil, I've been known to get this disc stuck pretty good. Then I have to chain it to the FEL bucket and lift it out.

Your disc is a lot heavier than mine (I add about 500 lb of concrete weight to my disc to get it to work better).

All in all, that old Towner does a pretty good job. This field was planted a few weeks ago with Austrian winter peas (plowed with the Towner plus a drag, seeded and then finished with my 10-ft cultipacker).

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. That planted field looks nice.

Thanks. Now if we would get some decent rainfall maybe something will grow out there. Only about 2" of rainfall since the wet season began last Oct.

I've been hard at work getting this old disc restored. I sandblasted it and primed and painted it Allis Chalmers orange. It's now ready to reassemble! Got new 24" smooth 1/4" discs, new bearings, new hydraulics, new wheels and tires, fasteners, and fabricated several new steel parts that were broken. I also welded repairs on the tongue, and plan to repair the scrapers. Removing the bearings from the housings gave me fits, and now in retrospect, I probably could have not been so careful to salvage those. I broke one in my learning curve, but last night, after carefully cleaning them and placing new bearings, I discovered the new bearings were very loose in several of the housings, so loose, that the shaft would spin the whole bearing in the housing, not spinning internally as necessary. I conclude that the disc was used with bad or locked up bearings, resulting in extreme wear in the internal surface of the housing as the whole bearing spun in it. This system is dependent on a tight leakproof fit, which is necessary to be able to inject grease into the fittings. The loose fit interupts the pathway grease follows from the grease fitting to the balls. So unfortunately, I am having to replace 3 or 4 more housings (at $86 each). But at this point, I have no choice, so I am over budget at $2000 plus (I don't want to add it up!) But even so, when done, this will be like new and new discs like this are over 10 grand new. Athens Plow is even sending me some new decals for free!

Looking good--keep on trucking:thumbsup:

I'm nearly finished remodeling my 13-ft wheel disc. Cut the frame down and shortened the 4 axles. Need to drill two of the axles for roll pins and reweld the hitch. I'm going with a pintle hitch on the tractor and a lunette on the wheel disc.

Nice work HC:thumbsup:

It's too bad the gangs aren't easily removed because a grader blade assembly mounted in place of the front gang would make one fine road grader.

Multitask implement.

Just about have my disc finished. I will post some pix soon. The scrapers need some attention. A few of the support arms are bent and a few scraper blades need replacement. I was just wondering if they are really necessary. If the soil is wet and muddy, I doubt if I am going (or will be able) to pull this disc anyway, so I don't expect mud to be collecting on the discs. My old Leinbach 20" three point disc never seemed to get clogged up and I don't see many discs with scrapers. Do you think they are worthwhile or should I just leave them off, as I could always add them later. However, once I take this to my farm, it would be harder to repair them there. I guess I am trying to save myself the trouble of fixing them if they are not needed. This disc is a beast with the new 24" blades!!
