Here's another site with explanation, maybe a bit more detail:
Electrolytic Rust Removal [Archive] - Shop Floor Talk
This site suggests that more electrical power does not clean faster. I am not sure that makes sense to me. I am able to switch between 6 and 12 volts and it seems to bubble much more on 12 volts. Also, the solution I mixed was a lot stronger, and seems to eat paint real nicely. I used half a box (unsure what that means exactly, but guessing I used about 4-5 cups of Washing Soda), in 20 gallons. One other thing that needs experimenting is, the amount of washing soda you add determines the conductivity change in the water. There is probably a correct amount of conductivity, and that relates to the total electrical current you have available. In other words, if you only have 10 amps available, use less Washing soda than if you have 50 amps available. I think. Or I could be wrong.

The brackets ARE 3/8" steel.

Finished pictures. Turned out pretty nice. It is nice knowing it is not simply painted, but is actually all new; every bearing, every bushing, new chain, all the coulters, all the fasteners, virtually every wearing part. In addition, I took the time to straighten out some details with the chain drive system to make it run true and not pull to one side constantly trying to derail off the idlers, as it had been running before.
It is set up on 30 inch spacing. That should leave 4 inches from the row to the inside of the back tire of the tractor, on each side.

I've a four unit model 71 and would like to do the same thing but, Mother Deere's parts price scare me to death. The local JD store does not like the small four unit type planter and don't get very excited about helping the small farmer types as they cater the industrial high horsepower new equipment operations. Did you find any aftermarket parts places for that planter? Two of my units center section hole where the seed drops down from the hopper are more round than rectangle, are those 70 model or 71? I need the seed tubes that guide the seed down between the opener discs. Do you use the seed tubes on corn? I've downloaded the parts book from the place in Nebraska (Yetter) that still sells the 71's but that's all they'll talk about and diidn't know or wouldn't say about parts for the 70's. bjr

Yea, the parts are high priced. I spent about $175 per row for all the new parts. The only parts I sourced from other than the JD dealer were bolts and bronze bushings. And paint. I couldnt get Yetter to sell me any parts. I guess you could get Yetter parts from a Yetter dealer, maybe.

Sometimes there are JD 71 planter parts on E-Bay. You will be at the mercy of accurate descriptions or you may end up with parts that still need to be replaced by the hi JD parts.
