Been a while but the first of the year I retired and we have been looking hard for a house,, We finely found one and are headed over the 25th. to hopefully buy it. Just a small place about 1400 sq. m , 2 bedroom and 2 baths. The house is almost new I guess we will see how it goes..

How much were plane tickets? We're going in early summer and haven't bought tickets yet. The exchange rate is sure a lot better than it has been in awhile, over 50 pesos now. I've seen it as low as 39. My first trip over in 07 the rate was around 55 pesos per dollar. I bought dinner for 10 people and drank several beers for about 10$ US in a little mom and pop chicken shack.

Where are you looking at places?

Kevin

Tickets were about 1,200. For 2 one way.. The house we are buying is about 2 hr. south of Manila,, Just out side of San Pablo City..

"Hopefully"???

That's a mighty weak foundation for a retirement plan.

All retirement plans are hopefully,
Hopefully we have good health
Hopefully our house doesn't burn down
Hopefully a truck doesn't run us over

Looks like hr3 has put in a significant amount of planning.

One of my buds at work married a Thai when he was about 50 and is now about to retire to Thailand. Seems like a similar situation. When the American dollar goes a long way it makes sense.

That's why I'm retiring to Mississippi from Northern Virginia. My present 1/4 acre lot and 4 bedroom house will probably buy us another 300 acres of hunting/timberland, and if I sell my 1/2 acre rental property up here maybe another 300 acres and I might make it to 1,000 acres of growing trees.

My Northern Virginia real estate dollar goes a lot further in Northern Mississippi.

Great clean and modern shopping in the Philippines can be done at Pure Gold and S & R. Much like a Cosco with out have to buy in bulk. Pure Gold has no membership fee.

Nice white table cloth dining can be found at Maxx's, nothing beats chowking sweet & sour pork. Wife and kids love Jollybe's but its not for me. We actually have a Jollybe's in Norfork VA and its always packed. I think Los Angles and New Jersey have them also. I like many of the street foods also, especally banana cue, monkey meat on a stick (pork) and BBQ chicken. Andocs has good roast chicken and yellow cab pizza is good with a bottle of san maguel or red horse. Heck, its worth trip just for a few nights under the stars drink Tanduay rum and coke all night for about $1.75 total. I was stationed at NAS Cubi point for back to back tours in my Navy days plus plenty of ship port call at Subi Bay and Cubi Point during the mid 80's and eary 90's. Met my wife there in 1987.

Have you ever been there ???

I don't have to go there to read up on the geology, which, being a life-long geology nut, I have done. Have you?

As for the "hopefully" on buying property.... Life-changing plans don't have to be built on "hopefully". They can be built on facts. We have things like phones and the Internet, which can be used to check assumptions before money is committed.

Some people think that's important. Some prefer to gamble. Suit yourself.

When I used the "hopefully" it was in regards to the purchase of the house. Until we are there and have the moneys transferred and have the house checked through the banking system then it will be ours. We have talked to the owner but you never know is this day. She took the house off the market so I believe she is honest "hopefully". We will find out next week.
