Retirement - Day 1

   / Retirement - Day 1 #21
OK now you've got me thinking...

58 (next year) I'll have 31 "credited" years with the New York State retirement system. Actually, I will have worked 28 years but the state in its generosity gave all veterans 1-year credit for every year of service up to 3 years max. I had 4 years but I got credit for 3 hence the 31 years of service with NYS. Before that I worked as a civilian for the NAVY for 6 years and before that I was in the NAVY for 4.

Am I boring you yet?

I went in the NAVY at 18 (or was it 19 now I don't remember).
I never took one penny from unemployment insurance or from my folks.
I got my BS in Electrical Engineering by using the GI bill while I worked part time to raise my family.

This sounds like a resume so now I'm positive I'm boring you.

Anyway I've worked long enough.
I'm done patting myself on the back. A lot of friends are more successful then I and some aren't. I feel very fortunate to have a wonderful wife, kids and Grandkids. I love my secluded property. It's my tractor playpen as my wife calls it.

I am so looking forward to doing just what I want to do every day.
That will be heaven.

I did that for a few months. When I retired, we closed on the sale of the house 3 days later and moved into the fifth wheel trailer, but my wife continued on her job for nearly 9 more months, so I played golf and fished, but also got home every afternoon in time to have dinner ready when she came home and I did all the house cleaning, and found time to do something else I'd planned to do for many years and that was to read the Bible all the way through from front to back.

Much deserved congrats. Now in the next year, you'll lose ten years, if ya know what I mean.

At least 1 1/2, no more than 3 for me. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Not boring.
That was interesting, and there are some real parallels to my career. Never imagined taking unemployment either, nor did I get money for my BS or MS. Very happy with what I have accomplished.
You did good. Enjoy the fruits.

I am almost as happy for you as I was for my self when I finally decided enough was enough after two full careers in 1992, Incidentally never looked back and enjoy more physical health now than before. Have been able to divert my God given energy's to accomplish things that please me and to hell with the onlookers (Wanna-bee's) that has somehow cluttered our society!!

It can only happen once in your life, Go forth and enjoy the hell out of it!! After all it's all about you now!!
