Riding in bucket

Iowa has one of the largest active Amish settlements in the country (Amana Colonies), they are very hard working but as far as the "if you get hurt it's God's will" part, sounds like stereotype wife's tale. They love their kids as much as anyone and if they get hurt they take them to the doctor.

There is a gentleman in my town that is well excepted by the Amish and has a nice side business driving them to doctor's appointments, job sites or whatever. They do shun ownership of many modern "entrapments" but they will except rides if they can't manage in other ways.

My family and I sat next to an Amish family at the last Quad Cities Airshow, gotta admit, they did look out of place.

My wife and her 3 sisters make an annual pilgrimage to the Amana Colonies so they can spend lots of money and bring lots of stuff home.

Couple of years ago her oldest sister in Council Bluffs got a new Chrysler Cruiser so they all went up in that. What they discovered was that you can't put 10lbs of crap in a 5lb bag. Of course they also discovered that the good folks there were willing to UPS all their purchases to them. Not good for my wallet since now space in the vehicle is no longer a consideration in what they purchase.

Golly, I love the way these threads drift off-topic with 10 parsecs off the initial post!

Wingnut - "I love the way these threads drift off-topic"

I get a kick out of reading them just to see how far off topic they can get. It's a lot like meetings - five minutes into the meeting and everyone's already forgotten what the meeting was for.

OK, I'll through in my .02 on Amish stories.

I'm a school psychologist and test children for learning disabilities. The Amish in our area have their own school but it is funded by the Board of Education. It was a small three room White Clapboard building out in the country. The first time I went to the school I happened to walk into the library. There were two long rows of study carrels, each with a small Amish child working on....Computers. They can watch film strips but are not allowed to watch movies or VCR's. The boy I was testing was not Amish, but rather "hard core" Baptist. A standard question I ask is..."are you having any trouble in school?" His reply, "yes, I get teased a lot." Surprised, I asked "about what?" His reply..."my clothes." He was wearing a football jersy and blue jeans! I guess somethings are the same everywhere!

I met an Amish family thorugh a friend and we were invited to spend Easter with them. They even invited us to their Church for services though they said it was three hours long and all in German. We respectfully declined and they were very understanding. Also they had several huge picture albums full of several generations of Family members, gatherings and such.

The men were carpenters. They could use a gas operated air compresor and air tools, nailers etc. but nothing electric.

I once saw nine Mennonite carptenters build a house in a day for Habitat for Humanity. They were highly skilled and cooridinated and NEVER stopped running. I took pictures every 15 min. It was amazing!

Now how's that for "off topic" Lol!
