Cherokee,

He does look to be a lady killer!

Congrats!

MeanJean,
After reading about all the safety concerns you guys are having about the high-power high-caliber shooting you're using, I have to ask, could you guys would get nearly as much control and skills practice by shooting smaller, slower rounds at targets placed at proportionate distances?

Like 22LR's at 100 yards or whatever amount more you want to add?
There would be quite a bit less to worry about with both overshots and ricochets and given the relative energy of the rounds, it could still be made to be a very challenging endeavor...

Just saying!

Great looking dog. I lost mine not too long ago :( It took me about 6 months to even think about getting another, finally my wife said you NEED a new dog. I really did not want one again, but got one anyway. He is a pound puppy and still a little small for doing much outside, too many coyote out for me to feel good about letting any dog outside. (my old one died of cancer)

Anyway here is Remington.....first his "mug shot"...with a face like that you know you are in for trouble.

The auto plate racks that I posted are what we use for .22 LR out to 300 yds. It teaches you wind quite well and drop. A .22lr zeroed at 25 yds is about 48" low at 200 yds and 156" low at 300.

I do enjoy shooting the 22lr and am able to safely do so on our property at home. When we get to the "ranch" the bid dogs come out and play. There's a real feeling of satisfaction when you bang steel at 400+ yards.

Side note: all parts are in and I will be posting pics of the finished product, hopefully by this weekend.

Sure trigger time is trigger time. Lately I have been shooting a great deal of air rifles. Also using some of the laser training tools out there. Really help with PPC ans such.

We've got steel targets set up at 300, 400, and 500 yards for high power shooting.
We hang them on swing sets so they sit roughly 4 feet off the ground.
The problem is you can't always hear a hit, or see movement.
I need a cheap, and easy method of clearly indicating a hit at these distances.
Taking suggestions please.

I use a motion sensor fixed to the back of my 300 yard 1" thick plate, with a receiver on my shooting bench.this set up works on RF and works well
at this range. You need a sensor, transmitter and a receiver. My plate hangs on old welded logging chains, and I can here the hit on all but very
windy days even with 66 year old ears that have heard to many gun shots.....Bill

I'm also considering an attached flag.
Weld a nut to the back of the target and attach a yard flag with just the right bend.
Once the target is struck the flag "pops up" on the back side.

Why not attach the flag to a heavy spring that is welded to the target. When the target is hit the spring will move the flag. Doesn't have to be reset.

Great idea!

I tape orange clay pigeons to a cardboard backing out to 800 yards. But believe it or not, you can actually shoot a hole through one in the middle and not break it. I took a bunch of old worn out bush hog blades and cut them into 12" lengths and build an A-frame bottom for it to stand up in/on. I've shot them as close as 50 yards with a 270WSM and all it does is speckle the paint.

If you try the clay pigeon route, start shooting the bottom ones first. I tape 9 in a 15" square. By the time you shoot 9 times you need to let the barrel cool. Then you can walk a mile round trip or ride the 4 wheeler.

You can adjust the forward tilt on the bush hog blade so it will fall at long distance even with a 223. With a bigger rifle you'll see it go down and a pause and then hear a hard splat.

I'll try to post a pix of the bush hog targets if you're interested.

You could also do like "trick shot" shooters did and mount two balloons to a steel plate, with an axe blade infront. Fire anywhere that the bullet can strike the plate and the ballon's will pop.

Made it look like they split the bullet. Gets less believable if you put dozens on the plate though.
