I say use a bigger gun. My 45-70 never fails to let me know when the steel gong is hit.

That's a long shot with a 45-70
Average Maximum Point Blank Range is 157 yards.
You would be lobbing that hunk of lead more like mortar!

I just hope you guys have something around this target to stop all the metal flying around....or are really far away from everyone and anyone....some things I have read here down right scare me.

Although we are many miles from the closest neighbors I would feel better with a proper back stop installed.
I'm trying to convince the property owner to add a pile of dirt to each and every target.

You would be amazed just how far bullets will go. A "pile of dirt" can mean a great many things....just be very careful.

If the range is fine if you miss the target, use AR500 plate, don't angle any of the target to deflect bullets upwards, don't shoot AP or steel core ammunition and never shoot steel at ranges closer than 100yds, you won't have any issues.

Most of this video is of impacts on regular steel. You can tell quite a difference with the hardened steel plat impact around 8:59. The crater(s) will send things back, flat plate just disintegrates the bullet and the particles disperse radially from the impact.

Lots of if's in there.

Yes there are. If the range is safe to shoot a paper target, can catch a miss and your distance to the steel being far enough away are #1&2.

Many things in life have a lot of "if's" to become safe. Driving, swimming, being with a woman, even breathing or just shooting in general.

Found another one of the sensors I use, this is one of the lot I picked up from BG Micro. Someone had already sanded off the important information off the housing. The extra box is so it can trigger multiple devices. like a light and other targets.

All I am saying is take care I don't think anyone has ever been killed by breathing.....perhaps being with a woman will make you want to kill :) but you know what I mean.

It sounds like we are shooting centerfire rifle here and I know bullets can travel over 3 miles easy. Our club had to shut down its 500 yard range because a bullet left the range and a bullet was found in someone's house over 3 miles away....was it the same bullet...who knows, but with a gun club there, you know who got the blame. Does not matter that there are deer hunters also in the area, the gun club took all the heat. We also have had kids show up on the berms to watch.....everything shut down right away. Great care must be taken....do everything you can to make it safe. That is one reason I am re building my home range.

Sure they have there are lots and lots of things you can breath in that will kill you. Some people do it on purpose when they sit in a running car in a closed garage with the intent of death by breathing. Also happened to a bunch of people in WW II Germany.

A woman With HIV can kill you too.

Everything has "if's".

If the bullet that forced your club to shut down that range had hit a steel plate @ 500 yards they wouldn't have shut it down.

No steel...sorry.

But I can see my point must be lost on you.....I wish your profile had a location so I would be sure to stay FAR AWAY.
