Thanks Moss,

I have a new house so chimney is good to go. It is just getting the stove downstairs. I can get some help, maybe a bunch of us can just muck it down without the brick.

Glad to help. The appliance dolly is man's best friend. I've moved water heaters (old out and new in), safes, freezers, washers, dryers, big printers, furniture, refrigerators, etc... by myself many times. A couple strong bodies under it and a couple above it and you will be fine. You could even use a strong rope and pulleys on the handles and lower it down the steps if you have a good anchor above and not enough folks, but several folks should do it. If you took out 100 pounds of brick, it will weigh 800. 4 people, that's only 200 per person, on a slope, so its less.

I don't know about you, but I weigh well over 200 and I don't have a problem lifting myself off the floor, a couch, up a ladder, stairs, etc.... people are a lot stronger than they give themselves credit for. Its not like they're trying to bench press 200. They're controlling the weight going down a ramp. If I was there, I'd give you a hand. Just plan it out before you commit to the drop. Good luck!

How about a tree boom? Does your tractor have SSQA? Tree booms are not terribly expensive and have multiple uses. Allows you to extend the reach of the loader, is very narrow and when "dumped" can lower something about 4 feet below grade.

I use one to lift a swimming raft up from a seawall. Your process would be the reverse.

I think MossRoad has the very best answer. When I had a wood stove my son & I grunted it onto the main floor of the house. It had to go UP five steps to get from the ground to the main floor. We were just plain lucky that neither of us got crushed or otherwise seriously hurt. If you can get delivery, install & cleanup for around $500 that is the best deal you will make on that day or on a lot of other days.

I'm assuming the problem lies in placing the stove on the inclined ramps and keeping it in place so the tractor can be backed up and a longer cable/chain attached?

The dolly first if possible.

Next: put in the ramps with two or three wedge's fastened to the bottom so they can't slide on the steps. Lower the stove onto the ramps. Nail a two by four block across the ramp to stop the stove from sliding. Lower stove and slack off to see if stove moves. Then unhook and back the tractor up to the length needed and hook up with a little slack. Next remove the blocking. If the stove does not move use a pry to lift the downhill side till it does and takes up the slack. Repeat as many times as necessary to get to the bottom.

Then put a couple of short planks under the stove with blocks at the front. Get in back and use lever to move to proper spot. A rug under the planks may be needed. Reward yourself with a couple of nice drinks.

No excessive force required and one can do it by oneself.

Hi Everybody. Just posted a thread about buying wood stoves. Probably will buy one, so I am wondering how I will get it into the basement. It may weigh up to 900 pounds.

[/snip]
The beginning height would be the bed of my Tacoma,

Are you sure you can put 900 pounds in the bed of that Tacoma?

How much does a hernia operation cost today. Your insurance company may not cover your house if you install it.

I would put it my truck, but I don't know about that much weight on the tailgate.

Always good to check with your insurance company before installing a wood burning stove.
