Right way to clear a wooded lot?

I skid logs with my backhoe. Buck the logs into 10-12' lengths, scoop and pull them out. 12"-14" logs are typically my limit. I also use the BH for brush clean up. You can create some pretty big piles and the BH will compact and hold them well for hauling. I vary rarely cut on site anymore. I will typical cut, buck and haul to a staging area. In the fall I start my fire wood cutting and stacking in the same spot.
