Ripper Claw

I suppose you could make an argument for grabbing a root on the in stroke and then on the out stroke, but really, it just looks uber cool. Its handy for grabbing smaller roots and yanking them out.

These DIYs are showing some impressive design and execution IMO. Without teeth my hook has to snap roots. It's quite over-built for my Terramite, but I don't have the raw power to make the most of that. I'm inspired to dream up a way of adding something similar. Such will give smaller BHs a lot of bite, and roots can be a bear when they're 'green' and like rope. Thanks, guys!

took an idea from the bxpanded company for my bigger backhoe. 3/4 inch plate cut with a plasma cutter on an angle to achieve a pretty sharp edge. Finished it with a grinder and stuffed it in my wood boiler to get it hot then dunked it in oil. I beat it to DEATH trying to break it. No luck, didn't even bend. Very pleased with the results.

What grade of steel are you using that you can heat it and dunk it in oil? I see you're using 3/4" for the toothm what about the rest of the implement? Are you heating the whole thing prior to welding?

How would a 6-8" backhoe bucket work as a trencher and stump root ripper?

In my experience, any bucket less than 12" wide clogs up too easily. I got rid of my 9" bkt. If you don't have a ripper claw, you CAN get similar effects with a regular bucket, but with only a center tooth. Most 12" bkts have 3 teeth, so remove the outer 2, and you have a poor man's ripper. That assumes bolt-on teeth, of course.

Ordered the ripper from MIE (URT-85). It will cost about $850 with shipping. They are about 5 weeks behind so it will be mid June before I can offer any feedback. Should of just bit the bullet and ordered it last fall but I was trying to save a few hundred bucks.
Shame Brotek decided not to make any more.

I used 3/4 for the tooth its self. Then 1/2 inch on the back plate with a 3/8 plate behind it attaching to the mounting brackets. I welded it all up and put it all in the fire then oil. I buy 99% of my steel as "throwaway" or scrap. Just mild steel stuff. I figured if it broke it broke. But surprisingly it is holding up quite well. Considering no steel company will actually tell you what steel can handle I am just finding out my own way. My plasma cutter only will cut up to 7/8 so this was about as big as I could do since I was cutting on an angle.
