This idea has merit....the foundation would be that if several members who had achieved a certain level of veracity reported a new member post, then it would be removed for review by a moderator....

Right... Let the lynch mobs begin. Spam is OBVIOUS... Let the mods(let's face it, this site makes money off of us) figure out how to deal with it.

Why? I don't but I am curious why we shouldn't.

Regardless of how many people report a particular post, there's only one post for the moderators to remove. But if there are replies to that post in the thread, those replies won't make sense after the spam is gone. And it's extra time and work for a moderator to remove those replies. In some cases, I guess if the spam is a new thread; i.e., first post in a thread, then the reply is removed when the spam is removed, but if the spam is elsewhere in a thread, that's another matter. We did have a quicker, simpler way to remove spam and ban the poster, but that had to dropped because it also banned anyone who had replied to the spam.

Looks like we keep reporting. Same thing spaming us again tonight. Like the new speed for reporting posts.

How about only letting new posters post in new member introductions. Until that is vetted the rest of the forums will be safe?

The spammers seem thoughtful - having pushed viagra yesterday they seem to be pushing tramadol today in case you have any side effects - like a banging headache.

Seriously though, what about removing / reducing the 10 second delay in reports - having just reported a number of the tramadol spams I hit this many times. Also, as the spams look the same, how about changing the little triange (say to red) if you the thread has been reported already to save folks wasting their time / reduce the number of reports the mods receive?

The admin controls of the forum software should be able to remove a thread and all child posts in that thread. After all its just a database. If the forum software can't do that basic functionality then a programmer needs to be hired to add it. Then its easy to remove a spam post.

This really is a good idea.

Whats wrong with that? Maybe it would get the point across to not quote spam:laughing:

This really is a good idea.
x2. Great Idea

Along these lines, about knowing when a post has been reported so thousands of members arent reporting the same post, does it help if we reply (without quoting) that a post was reported? I saw another member do it, and I just did, but wonder if it helps or if it creates more work for the mods??

Noticed on the sign-up popup now it's necessary to type two random words so that should slow down the automated computer spammers.

Just went to new posts....first one was spam...everything was intelligible, content, title, subject, all in well spelled English. Location was even a legit word, dunno if it was correct. I reported it. Anyway, stuff is still getting past the filters, but let's hope it is reduced.

I try to help the forum by reporting spam, the reporting process sure is slow though. I wish there were a way to streamline that.

IM NEW HERE BUT I THINK YOU GUYS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE SPAM BY KEEP MAKING THREADS ABOUT SPAM IN THIS FEEDBACK SECTION. i JUST LOOKED AND IT IS ONE SPAM AFTER ANOTHER IN THE THREAD TITLE. MAYBE JUST IGNORE THE THREAD OR REPORT IT. END OF STORY. I MAY BE A LITTLE OLDER THAN YOU FOLKS (73) BUT IM STILL WITH IT. CARRYING ON IS JUST MORE POWDER TO THE KEG. iM SURE THE OWNER OF THE SITE IS OPERATING WELL WITHIN HIS POWERS. nO MORE JIBBERISH ABOUT SPAM. MOVE ON

No, we're not contrbuting to spam...just reporting it and bringing a problem up to TBN management.
Spam hits every online forum...not just TBN. It wastes bandwidth (bandwidth costs money) and irritates the members (me, for example).
One cannot expect the management or mods to see it all...unless we report it.
There have some good ideas on these anti-spam threads to reduce spam. One was the report button changing color after being reported (so the mods don't get multiple reports for the same thread). Another is the use of random characters to prevent the automated spambots from creating "memberships").

Sounds to me like you resent the fact that TBN might be profitable. It costs us nothing to join or post for that matter so why should it even matter that the site makes money. If it didn't make money you would be asked to dip into your pocket to support it. Make sense?

BTW: I hate spam

No sir, quite the opposite. I was simply pointing out that "senior" members didn't earn the right to judge junior posters... Hence the lynch mob comment. That is a function of the owner or mods. If spam is a problem, they should deal with it.
