In the early eighties I lived in So California. I also did some business in Vegas. California had rules against triples. Nevada didn't. So at the border you'd see UPS triples breaking down and hooking up as the trucks adjusted for the different state's regulations.
The longest trailer I've ever towed was behind a duece and a half in Nam back in 67. I delivered four seventy five foot telephone poles to a base in the boonies. We went about sixty miles. On some of the corners the front wheels of the truck were almost inside the homes along the road while the trailer wheels were against the homes on the other side of the road.
I was about the youngest guy in the outfit and it was an honor to be picked for such a job. And it was fun.

Not quite like you guys, your the record holders as far as I know. But the road trains Iv've seen were even bigger than your attachment. You guys have some monsters. Sure would like to have one of yours the next time an idiot tailgates me for miles, then passes me on the blind side and cuts me off. That could be REAL interesting. They have a lot of full length doubles up here on I80/90 in northern Indiana and UPS is famous for the shorter length boxes hauled tripple, but nothing like the road trains you have over there. It is pretty scary driving behind the triples on a windy day. They are all over the road and don't stay in their lanes very well.

Finally found what I was looking for. We had several of these moving large stamping presses out of our facility in the mid '80s when production ceased here. Sad, but impressive trucks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Only 74 tires on the rig that you showed here. The road train that I ran in the Broom area in Western Austrilia has 104 tires and weels.
Some of the roadtrains are massive, and I have never seen anything in the US that is as big as a roadtrain. One problem is that we have hills and mountains. Autraila is as flat as it gets, now they will point to the Snowy Mtns. and say they have mountains, they don't. The road trains that we used would not have enough power to pull the load up the mountains. However, they are massive, impressive and dangerous machines. It should also be noted that the run on 2 lane roads most of the time many of which are gravel or dirt.

Most of the road trains are not allowed in cities, roads here are improving but we still have lots of dirt roads. and thousands of miles of 10 ft sealed roads, (QLD being the worst). When a road train comes towards you on these narrow roads, you get out of their way in a hurry and pull up.

Yes, in WA we had to break them down when going into cities as well, however, Perth is the only city in WA. so there was lots of road to run on. Most of my driving was from Perth to Darwin and a lot in the Broom and Pt Hedland area. Loved it. I miss Oz very much, but my kids have dual passports, so I can still go back.
The great norther highway, 2 lanes for 3000 miles or so with a lot of dirt when in the Gascoyne area was a lot of fun in the wet, we get though, no worries mate, became a phrase that I did not like to here.
WA was a fine place to live.
