I have confirmed that this is the unit that was built by PT with this engine and that generac will honor its warranty. Is having the only one a good thing?

IMO, no it's not... since you're buying a tool to use and maintain -- and not a collectible item (where uniqueness/rareness adds value)...

Hmm...fair point, but is it truly unique? It is a mainstream engine, PT is willing to warranty the tractor, Generac is willing to warranty its engine in this tractor, and I am told that the main reason they did not go witht his engine is that it was too expensive relative to the Robin...which I took it to mean that although it is "peppier", the added cost may not have been worth it. Just a guess. I am not challenging you, just having an open discussion.

I guess I agree that it's not a collectible, so uniqueness may not be good. If you have the only Generac machine, other owners can't help with questions that might have answers unique to your PT. That being said, if the Generac is a good engine, it's reasonable to assume that the pumps and the rest of the machine will be as standard as can be expected on various PT versions. If the machine is substantially cheaper because it's a one-off, I'd go for it.
But, it's worth a challenge to Terry Estep at PT. (He's probably reading this.) Call and ask him if there is a functional reason why the Generac isn't as good as the Kohler or Robin. I'd bet that if there were really a drawback, they wouldn't have sold the machine. There are lots of reasons to choose a supplier that may not have to do with the function of the machine.

This is getting interesting. On a whim, I called Generac and tracked down their Warranty Manager. He did not know about Power-trac but commented that that meant nothing. He said this engine has 33 HP and is the same engine that Orange County Choppers uses for some of their custom motorcycles on cable. His only concern for warranty purposes is whether they had tested the design for sufficient air flow purposes, but looking at the pics of the 425 he did not think that was a problem. However, he had never had anyone ask whether a one up model would be covered under their standard warranty and is taking it up the ladder to find out. He said that if you look at the power curve, its peak HP is 38.

So, I could chop this 425, add extended forks, custom paint, and sell it for over $100,000 like they do on their choppers?

Generac just called back. NO WARRANTY. PT will not be happy.

So, sounds like a serious point to negotiate the price down!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yah, tell them no warranty and see what they say.... "O.K. thanks for shopping here, buh bye." /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The engine does sound intriguing, though. Why doesn't he buy it and let us know how it works?... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So if I buy a Generac engine and put it in my home made whatever, there is no warranty?
Does not sound like much support to me.
