That was one of the most awesome stupid sappy "horror" movies ever! I wish it would come back on Netflix so I could watch it again! Christine is another and do you remember Runaway! with Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons??

The old movies were great:thumbsup:

Guys, I work for a large company that owns and maintains landfills. I manage our data network that we used to communicate with our remote controlled dozers. We just launched our first landfill last month on this new technology. I was able to go see it live and I must say it’s one of the coolest things I have ever seen date. We are going using it to employee disable veteran’s that may not physically be able to get themselves in the operators cab. As a company it gives us all new types of capabilities that we never had before. Think about it if an equipment operator calls out sick we can use any operator within the company do get the job done. It also makes our site a lot safer to work in. I personally own dozers and other equipment that I use in my spare time so this is a project I truly love. My understanding is this technolgy has already been in use in the Mining Industry for a good while.

Regards,

Tim

I heard a show a while ago that spoke of a Japanese company that was building Military Fighting Robots that apparently killed a bunch of people, unintentionally. Like not by accident, but doing what they were built to do.

I always liked that movie from the 70s of the D9 gone crazy, Killdozer.

Interesting how the uninformed call any vehicle used in construction a "bulldozer." Referring to the author of the linked article, not the OP.

Kind of like how people call any kind of unmanned vehicle a "robot."

I think we're going to be seeing a whole lot of this kind of tele-presence as a prelude to full-on automation. Start off with a bunch of guys in a data center working the controls with a video link. From there, start automating some of the routine tasks, switch back to manual control for the tricky parts. For example, have the operator position the excavator, then hit the "dig" button to have it dig a hole. Over time, less and less of the work will need to be done under manual control.

This is what I predict for self-driving vehicles as well. Let the computer handle interstate driving, then turn it over to manual control -- from the data center -- to get the truck from the exit ramp to the freight terminal.

Kind of like how people call any kind of unmanned vehicle a "robot."

I seem to remember that the originator of the term "robot" was a science fiction writer, and he used the word for what we would now might call "test tube clones."

His "robots" were real humans, but made in a lab.

My wife's brother is a heavy equipment operator. He says running a dozer making things like building pads is hardly a skilled trade anymore. He climbs up in the cab, fires up the machine, makes sure everything is up to pressure and temps, etc.... drives the machine kinda near the starting point, pushes a couple buttons on a GPS unit and the computer levels 90% of the pad. All he's there for is to maybe turn it around once in a while and do the very edges and a little touch up, and act as a deadman if something in the automation burps. He said it's getting kinda boring.

That's pretty cool. When I started in the Operating Engineer's Apprentice program 40 some years ago, something like this was pretty much a pipe dream. Mostly to be operating in hazardous materials applications. At that time, operators were fitted with protective gear to supposedly protect them.

Due to the gas embargo, I never finished the apprenticeship. They pretty well shut big construction down, and were lucky to keep the senior operators employed. It was a blessing in disguise, as I got a job for ODOT, and operated equipment for 32 years.

That's a great opportunity for the Vet's, especially the one's that have been in the Seabee's, or similar job in different branches of the service, and have at least some experience operating. That is awesome...

I just heard more on the robots. Three of them killed 29 lab workers. The fourth tried to link to a satalite and remake itself to protect itself as the other three robots were being destroyed.

Musk is asking for a UN ban on killer (AI) robots.
