Nice! Looks like a great unit.

I want one of them! You don't leave it parked too close to the house, do you? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

DDT. The bucket you made looks great. I have a large pile (probably 70 yards) of rock and dirt mixed together (about 30% rock and 70% dirt) that I would like to use under sod in my yard this spring. I was trying to decide how to separate the two. I was trying to find a small shaker for rent but I did not have any luck finding one. I'm thinking that a bucket attachment like the one you made might allow me to scoop the rocks out of the pile? What do you think? Have you used it in that way?

Thats looks like a rear 3pt loader! Did you make it just to pick up rocks? What else do you use it for? Looks heavy, is it? Whats the purpose of the sharp points at the back?

I see now, the sharp objects are just braces. Do you use this on the front of your tractor like a loader? What size HP tractor do you have?

Well I tryed for a link to build it your self, 12-31-04 root bucket. it is on page two right now. there is more pic's and also what it does with dirt and rock mixes. I don't think I know how to get the link to work. This will answer a lot of questions. It is a skid steer TQ for my loader. It is heavy, don't know how much though.
I use it for seperating rocks, concrete and any other crap from dirt. as long as the dirt is loose it falles right thru. I have a Kubota L 5030. It would also work well on a 35 HP tractor I sold awhile back.

After looking at your project I think I will make me one. I think I will make it a little smaller though. Thanks so much for the details.

DDT,
Thanks for the photos and the other information you provided. I'm going to seriously consider making or purchasing one.

That is why I posted it, build away. Keep in mind a HD wall pipe is stronger that soild shaft. NOTE the miters for the bottom and the back are more than two 45 degrees, mine are 52 degrees. This way the break out force will increase. I have maxed out the loader lift and break out force a lot and the bucket still looks good. I made this one 3" apart. I was wanting the smaller rocks as well as larger ones. The deeper you make the bucket the larger rocks and concrete it will pick up with out a grapple, But the less break out force you will have. I can put a grapple on this one but do not think it needs it. I built a grapple on a old bob cat bucket. I used it for every thing eles. Willing to help

Not in the physics and strength of materials classes I took. Just wondering how you came to that conclusion?

For a given material, and given outer dimensions, the maximum strength is achieved if the rod is solid (not hollow), but this also takes a lot of weight.

For a given material, and given weight, the maximum strength is achieved by a hollow cylinder, that is of larger diameter than the solid rod of that weight.

Most of the strength of a cylinder comes from the outer portions. I think the contribution goes like the cube of the radial position. So, if you took a solid rod and drilled out a half the volume from the center, you do not lose half the strength. You only lose about 10% of the strength, but you've saved on half the weight.

So, strength to weight ratio is better for a hollow pipe than a solid rod.

Just what I think. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
