Just rolled my Kubota L5038 HSTC. Turned the motor off as soon as it flipped(slow and softly) on it's side . Righted it in about 15 Min. Went to turn it over and nothing. Burned my starter thinking the clutch safety switch was not working. Took the injectors off (thinking oil was loaded in the heads) still not turning. Drained the oil from the motor to see if any metal fragments from a failed bearing nothing. Next step is to take the pan off and see if I can see any damage but hoping for help before I go any further.......

Can you turn it over by hand ?

No,tried to turn over manually and nothing. Wondering if it has to do with the hydrostatic transmission. It seems like a pressure lock of some kind because when I first tried it manually I was able to turn it a half turn and then it locked up. No grinding noise and again no debris of any kind in the oil. Thanks for the reply Will

Did you just remove the lines from the injectors or pull them out of the head. You need to remove the injectors from the head, then try cranking by hand first then crank it over until nothing blows out. It could be your hydraulic pump or hydrostatic pump but probably not.

I'm no mechanic, but could it be hydraulic lock from coolant getting into the cylinders? The only thing about that is if you crank it in this condition, you could have caused severe engine damage as the coolant won't compress. Hope it's something simple.

It's hard to say but the 1/2 revolution tells me it's locked up. I'd not worry about the base yet.

There are many possibilities. The tranny linkages may be "tweeked" and are closing a sfaety servo switch. There could be liquid in the cycliders. Battery connections may look ok but may have a fray somewhere and bleeds required cranking amps. Fuses may have been snared. Make sure the machine is level for sometime befroe attempting restart, can cause damage if fluids are in engine cyclinders. Good luck.

Dan Curtis & Chris, Removed the injectors from the cylinders. Dipped a long rod in to see if any oil was on the upper side of the heads, bone dry.

Curtis: You talked about a safety servo? any more info on that. That's the direction I'm thinking. Replaced the battery thinking that was why my starter was weak..starter was smoked! Replaced the starter and I'm not going to crank it until I can manually turn it. Starter rebuild $800.00 +

Curtis: I also put the tractor up to see if the linkage was the issue, but weather it's in high med low 2 wheel 4 wheel all tires spin? Is that due to it being hydrostatic tranny or is that a linkage issue??

THIS THREAD NEEDS PICS

Glad you're OK. No idea why it won't crank though. Welcome to TBN!

I would focus on the HST pedal linkage and the wiring there....as well as the seat safety switch. Does your model have the clutch depress safety switch also? Check the PTO cable and switch as well. It seems electrical to me and I would check all of the above plus the fuses. $800 for the starter....Yikes!!

Try removing the glow plugs along with the injectors and then see if you can turn the engine manually. $800.00 for a starter!!!!!!!

HST should not have a bearing on whether the engine will turn by hand but on the other hand if you are starting it with the starter then yes some linkage issue or switch may prevent the starter to engage.
$800 to rebuild a starter? What's a new OEM worth?
Man that's scary.
Good luck with your troubleshooting

Take a day off with the tractor in the upright position. Pull the injectors and see if it will turn over. :D

Then get on to the serious stuff.:D

there should be a way turn the crankshaft over by hand [ie with a wrench] at the front of engine.it should turn over fairly easy if you still have injectors out.place trans in neutral and give it a try.if you indeed got it shut off right away I would think it should not have done any damage inside the engine. If it ran for a minute or longer with no oil presure than damage could be done, but when you shut it off I would certainly think it would have been making some noise.

The same thing happened to my BX24. I was very concerned that I had ruined the thing but I was able to fix it with no long-term damage. I pulled the glowplugs, hand cranked it with a wrench on the flywheel for several revolutions, then cranked it with the starter for a bunch more until no more oil was flying out of the glowplug holes. I put the glowplugs back on and it fired up and has been running great ever since.
It was acting exactly as you describe. When cranking with the key, the flywheel would move a little bit, then move back when you let go of the key. I'm betting you'll be fine.

Thanks rdsaustintx,Cheap "E" ticket ride!

Curtis thanks again for the rply. It does have a clutch safety but the display tells u when it is depress to allow it to turn over.Could that be faulty? Clutch seems to have little movement from released to engaged about 4 inches. Will check seat safety and the PTO cable.HST linkage: should I put it back up and if so should there be free spinning wheel rotation no matter what? And $ 800.00 starter...gotta love Hawaii...they gothca coming and going

Try turning it over in neutral with a pipe wrench on the fly wheel. 1/2 turn then nothing

Is there a way to disengage the HST so I can eliminate that as a cause?

Have you checked the safety switch on the seat. Just a thought.

You think it flipped or broke? Would that allow the starter to engage even though it was not working, because the starter engages but no turning of the motor....will check in the morning
