Breaking a leg is sure no picnic, especially when you're 94. But he could have been crushed by the tractor, so I'd say he was very lucky. I sure hope he is able to get back on his feet soon.
The only time my HST tractor is in neutral is when I start it. There are no switches that kill the tractor when you get out of the seat. I always leave it in "gear" when I get off for whatever reason. I actually had not given it any thought until now, but freewheeling would seem to be more dangerous than the prospects of an HST malfunction that would cause the tractor to move without pressure to the pedal.
You must have been terrified watching the accident.
