Roma tomato

Roma's are for canning I thought. My favorite is Jet Star but I like to peal the skin off of them, it seams a little bitter and nearly as tuff as leather.

Romas are by far my fav!!! they are a meaty tomato less seed and firmer than the rest. I usually do 1 beefstake 1 jetstar 2 sweet 100 cherries. And this year 20 romas! They are the best for sauces, salsas, and the easiest to can.

We like big tomatoes to slice for sandwiches and such, but the Romas are cheaper and better for chopping up in salads.

We grow an even mix of about a dozen each of Roma and Rutgers, I like the Romas because they don't sprawl out of a cage and most of them ripen to a uniform size, unlike Rutgers. They have less juice and are easier to slice, we use most of ours to make our home made salsa.

Cherry tomatoes are a huge PIB to grow, they sprawl everyplace even when caged, and the hot, wet weather we are getting usually splits most of them before we can pick them. Yesterday I pulled up four of those plants because they were blocking access to the REAL fruit...

Yes, most of these are very good. This year I bought a big plump off-colored tomatoe that was heirloom. Very soft , thin skinned and the sweetest I have ever eaten. I did save some of the seeds so I can try for another next year. I also plant rutgers, roma, sweet100, jetstar, and Beefsteak.Something quickly killed the early girl as soon as it set some fruit about the size of golfball..

Brandywine for eating.

And the winner is. Just check around and you will see Brandywines ARE the tomato others are trying to beat in taste tests.

They are a late season tomato, little seed cavity, LARGE, an indeterminate variety which mean they will continue to grow to seasons end. They are ugly by many of today's std commercial varieties but ugly doesn't have a taste. One lb fruit isn't considered especially large.

My Brandywine plants are now over 5' tall and have a lot of fruit in the baseball to softball size. None yet ripe but they are getting there.

As for cherry sized tomatoes, can't beat SunGold as they have that strong old real tomato flavor. They are also an indeterminate variety and my plants are about 6' tall at this point. Have been eating on them for quite a while and have noticed this yr our dog has taken a liking to them. Will find her out at the tomatoes looking for ripe ones that have fallen to the ground. They have also brought a smile and nod of approval to family and friends this yr that haven't tried them before.

That is just what the Roma was designed for.

A few years back we had some Brandyvine sized so that one tomato produced enough slabs for eight slices of bread. But they are an ugly looking tomato.:)

My favorites are the Celebrity & Carnival. And Jim you are right about the soil it can make a difference in the taste. I use some Good Ole East Texas organic fertilizer.........Horse Manure tilled in all winter. Makes for some really good Tomatoes. I've already paid for the manure.

I wonder now and then, what Italian food was like without tomatoes. They are a New World veg/fruit. Imagine pizza without red sauce, spaghetti without that nice red tomato sauce... The "Old World" did not have tomatoes and some of the other veggies till after Columbus came over here...

Pizza as we know it wasn't invented until the late 1800's (~ 400 yrs after Columbus). Dunno about the spahgetti.

And I've heard that in spite of considering pizza an Italian food, that it was invented in the USA instead of Italy. I don't know that to be a fact, though.
