Roma tomato

   / Roma tomato #21
I've been planting Romas for several years. I can't get any taste out of then til they are cooked(we make sauce and juice). Maybe it's my ground.........I have a soil sample in now.

One thing I can say...............sliced down the middle...........the Roma tomato goes thru my Roma Food Strainer like butter.

Someone suggested planting Amish Paste tomatoes for sauce, any views?

Roma's were developed for commercial production.

For home use where harvesting and transportation damage is negligable there may be many different varieties that will suit one's need. Sometimes the Heirloom varieties have some very good properties but may take longer to mature or not look very nice.:)

I can tell you without reservation that NOTHING grows well after 60 days of 100+ heat and no rain. If I get a tomato off any of my plants that's bigger diameter than a quarter, it's time for celebration. I had great production until the heat went up.

Yup its been brutal so far here too not that bad but bad enough we just went past our heat record number of days of 50 over 100 from back in 1936 in the dust bowl days.

We are at 52 days today yesterday was 109 day before was 105 today supposed to be 103 sucks being in this heat and no rain dont it!

I think there is hope for us with all the hundreds of flowers on my plants they are just now starting to put tomatoes back on so I have my fingers crossed and hoping the bees come back out.

Wife is about out of our canned spaghetti sauce and so forth she has been blanching and freezing what she could so far hoping for a good finish to this season which should be awesome for you too if we all just get down into the 80's shouldn't be long now!

And my rogue Roma tomato eating turtle has apparently left the area my Roma's are starting to have un munched fruit again hahaha I felt sorry for the little guy he probably just needed food and water and we wernt getting much production out of them either so it wasn't a big deal for me but it made my wife kinda mad though. :)

I had no idea. I buy plants, so I'm limited to what the greenhouse has.

Tried starting my own seed last year, and it didn't turn out so well:(

Although as an update to my previous post. I ate one of the Romas today, and by golly there was a very good flavor. Maybe the Lime, the triple 19 fertlizer, and the horse manure made a difference.

I just got done canning 56 pints of salsa made from romas outa the garden today!! Was a LONG day but well worth the effort!
Green peppers, chilli peppers, hungaryin wax peppers, onions and garlic all from garden also. What a kick butt salsa and god I love living where I can maintain a garden!! 

We plant the "family tomatoes" - seeds that have been in the family for several generations. We call them beefsteaks & oxhearts. They are very meaty, and taste great. They are fantastic for eating in a salad, as a sandwich, or for canning.

This is the big one from this year - 4.5 lbs. We grabbed it a day or two early since we had some critters getting into the garden.

Our Roma plants are getting into full ripening mode right now, yesterday I picked two bushels of them and gave the majority away. My favorite summertime salad is as follows:

Chopped Romas and green peppers, add a bit of chopped chili pepper, plus chopped green olives and onion, salt and pepper to taste, then add your favorite shredded cheese and slather on either vinegar or dressing. My preference is to use sharp cheddar cheese and an expensive balsamic vinegar.

TAYSTEE !!!!!
