I learned the hardway the Fire Marshall supercedes everything... even the American with Disabilities Act and Uniform Codes.

Building here is very different than elsewhere and we don't ever have snow and very seldom frost.

There are a lot of changes like residential fire sprinklers now required... this also requires paying for an upsized water meter forever sized for sprinklers.

Here are a few changes for California and Oakland has added it's own...

Some notable changes to the California Building Code (effective January 1 2011 & effective January 2008)

R 237 addresses State code within 12' of grade in urban/wildland interface areas.

I did all my roofs with staples... never a problem... no longer approved here and as soon as I use all my roof staples I will switch...

Apparently nobody uses asphalt shingles either? You would be doing good to get 15-20 years out of an unvented roof, if it was out in the sun at all times I doubt you would get that, possibly out of 40yr singles in a light color but I doubt it

I see a lot of misinformation on the internet but this idea that nails have more holding power if they protrude thru the decking has got to be one of the most ignorant things I have ever read. Nails that stick thru the decking is caused by laziness, sloppiness, and just plain ole carpenter not having any pride in their work. I have never seen it on any older classic home with 1 by decking nor have I seen it on any new high end construction jobs. This must be some sort of regional old wives tale that has taken hold.

Curious where you get your information? Did somebody tell you this or is it something you just made up one day?

Two minutes looking up code for nails gave me this from the ICC. And as I'm sure you are aware, code is considered the minimum standard.

Chapter 9 - Roof Assemblies

"R905.2.5 Fasteners.
Fasteners for asphalt shingles shall be galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum or copper roofing nails, minimum 12 gage [0.105 inch (3 mm)] shank with a minimum 3/8 -inch-diameter (10 mm) head, ASTM F 1667, of a length to penetrate through the roofing materials and a minimum of 3/4 inch (19 mm) into the roof sheathing. Where the roof sheathing is less than 3/4 inch (19 mm) thick, the fasteners shall penetrate through the sheathing. Fasteners shall comply with ASTM F 1667."

40 plus years of building and overseeing the construction of high end residential homes and working with some of the best homebuilders on the east coast is where I got my information.
None of my jobs were ever built to the minimal standard so I guess I was never familiar with this nail sticking thru the decking code.
I never used decking less than 3/4 inch thick on any of my jobs.

Fact is guys, every place that sells roofing coils seems to only stock 1 1/4" coils of nails. Other lengths would be special order.
That being said just about every roofing nail practically penetrates the roof decking based on one layer of shingle on 3/4" decking.
Exception might be the so called 30/35 year shingles that are basically double thicks.

I never even see 3/4 used in roof decks here. A good quality job is done with 5/8 tongue and groove sheeting. A minimal job would be 1/2 sheeting with h clips between the rafters I prefer the heavier. Very rare for anyone to use the 3 tab or single layer dimensional shingles as well, laminated are must common, namely the certainteed landmark line.

1/2 inch over skip sheathing is standard here... many wood shingle roofs are being converted to laminate.

The porch and overhang is usually 1 by redwood... 3/4 plus 1/2 plus felt and shingle equals no shiners!!!

Ya you run into a few shake roofs here too but most are long since gone, usually you find them under 2 or 3 layers of shingles. I hate tearing off shakes

Lowes carried cedar shingles here. Or I should say one of them does. There are three Lowes within half an hour of me and it seems like just before I started building my wedding gazebo, they had a couple bundles on the shelves. I looked around and could not find anybody else who had them, or who said they had a reliable source to order them, so I ordered 8 squares from Lowes. Normally I wouldn't use cedar shingles for a roof, but in this case, they where the only thing I could find that I liked the look of, and in this case, looks where the most important part of the job!!!
