ROPS thickness

Hi, I'm now considering trying to build an rops for my yanmar. How thick is the metal on an ROPS? thanks, bw

Depending on the tractor it's mounted on, it varies... but I believe the average ~~ 3/16" (7 gauge) steel...

(I'll try to measure mine later and post)

Hey Brett,
On my 226 , what should be about the same size as your tractor (about 2000 lbs) yanmar used 2 inch square tubing with quarter inch wall. The adapter plate that bolts on to the rear axle housing is made out of 3/4 inch plate. Let me know if you need pictures.

PS helpfull tip, make sure that you make the rollbar low enough, or folding, so you can get it in your garage. My rollbar was about a 1/2 inch to tall, and after the 2nd try, out came the saw and welder, now I have a couple inches to spare.

I'd be careful with a homade ROPS . While it might be okay for you, If you ever sell the tractor and the next owner rolls the unit, you could and probably will be sued if the next owner gets injured. ROPS manufacturers have to be approved by OSHA, the structure MUST be welded by a certified welder and the ROPS must carry a certification plate that states that it is indeed, certified. If you reall want one, I'd contact a welding shop and have one made up by them. That way, the liability rests with them as the fabricators.

Dont build a rops. Build heavy duty light bar or canopy mount...

You can build almost anything yourself, but if you later sell it, you are the manufacturer. As long as you aren't doing it repetitively, you don't need a license. On the other hand, I'd call it a canopy or light bar when sold and the buyer must acknowlege it isn't being sold with US safety features (ROPS, PTO shield etc.).

can someone send some pics of there roll cage retro fit's? I'm about to add a rops and a fully enclosed cab for my hinomoto.. i'm planning on mowing several acres and was going to tint the windows /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gifetc.. but i'd like to get a rops fixed while i'm doing it.. thanks..

As far as homemade ROPS are concerned, if it is made at home is is not a ROPS unless you are a certified welder and mechanical engineer. Homemade ROPS should be removed from the tractor before it is sold. Even if you tell the new owner about it he is still betting his life of your workmanship. Maybe a homemade ROPS should be called a roll bar. I guess the mark should be higher for the amount of risk you are willing to accept for other people.
