Rotary cutter for M7040?

   / Rotary cutter for M7040? #41
Glad we got into this cat1/cat2 stuff.

I currently run the Pat's hook system. I was going to move them over to my new/old MF 255 and purchase a LandPride QH for the M7040.

Anyone for-see any problem with this? I figured the LandPride QH could be bushed if necessary to Cat2 and everything from that point on is Cat 1.

Comments?

Don't, do not, and please restrain yourself from buying the rigid QH with preset dimensions. The LandPride QH15/QH20 is just such a beast. Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply, and others sell a similar item. I bought two of them out of ignorance and sold them both within a week.

They will fit ONE and only one dimension. Implements are made with a multitude of dimensions with little standardization. Yes, there are specified dimensions for Cat 1 and Cat 2 but they seemed to be used as a passing fancy by manufacturers and especially on those home built.:confused2:

The LandPride SH35 QH shows a lot of promise but the top link hook would be a deal buster for me. Once again, you'd need all of your implements built or rebuilt to accommodate the QH. It would seem to be more logical and easier to have the QH accommodate the implement. (There are a few threads on just this subject.)

Land Pride Quick Hitches

You'd be better off buying a Pat's Cat 2 setup for the M7040 and bushing the Cat 1 implements to fit a Cat 2.

Pat's sells an insert that replaces the sliding ball ends on a M7040 for around $200. It enables me to use all of the Cat 1 and Cat 2 attachments without a hassle (unless sliding a bushing over the Cat 1 posts is considered a hassle).

With almost all of my implements being out of spec as far a Cat 1/Cat 2 goes it is a dream to be able to just back up and hook up. The top link does have to be manually attached but with the "Top" of a Top & Tilt it is not a problem.

Do you happen to have a copy of those dimensions you filled out for you M7040? I'd like to order it ahead of time if I go this route then.

I've been quite happy with the Pat's system on the L3400 so I seen no harm in sticking with it. Just though that things had been figured out wrt standardization by this point.

I'm replacing my rotary cutter with a LP and a blower and both are cat 1/2 QH compatible. My Woods boxblade is cat 1 QH compatible as well. I never use my cultivator but it may not be. I know my crappy Kodiak rake is not.

I should be able to get a Cat 1 QH, use bushings so that it fits on my Cat 2 3PT and then hook up to Cat 1 equipment correct?

Everything I've got is Cat 1 and the new stuff I am getting is labelled as Cat 1/2. I suspect as a result what I want is a Cat 1 QH hooked to my tractor.

Yes you could do that, I would not. You need to remember, if you are going to get the M7040, you are getting a much bigger more powerful machine than you have had. Yes you can use cat 1 implements behind it, I would not use any cat one implement that moved any dirt or gathered up material of any kind. You WILL eventually end up damaging the implement. Most of the cat 1 implements are simply not built to be used behind a tractor with cat 2 capabilities. I believe that the cat 1 part of the cat 1-2 tractors is for non load bearing implements such as a spreader and what not.

I personally ruined almost $2000 in implements getting a cat 1-2 rear blade and a cat 1 landscape rake that my dealer said would be fine behind my tractor. They were not abused, only pulled dirt with them. A lot of dirt and the dealer said that I must have abused them for them to be bent up as they were. So no warranty, just a "tough luck buddy". I now only use cat 2 implements behind my 75HP tractor.

Now there are guys who say that they have used cat 1 implements behind there cat 1-2 tractor and have had no problems, and I even believe them. But while using that cat 1 implement you are not working the tractor and I would guess that they have a neck and back ache from watching those implements non stop. In the end, you will need to get cat 2 implements or else never be able to use your tractor to it capabilities. And you had best grow a set of eyes in the back of your head so that you can watch those cat 1 implements non stop so as not to damage those implements.

Just trying to give you a heads up with what is ahead of you. ;)

Wish I had saved the numbers but didn't think it would come up again.

The measurements were taken to the thousandths and everything carefully checked and double checked - fretted over the numbers in fact. Then I called Greenwell.

They said that my measurements were standard for the M7040. They just wanted to make sure that it wasn't something odd.

So the bottom line is to call them and ask for the Quick Connect for the M7040 insert with standard measurements. They have the data already. It will take about a week to get the set. $205.

We run all our Cat 1 stuff on Cat 2 tractors, no problems. Things that don't do well are box blades. There is no way to reduce the damage of a hooked root when you have a big tractor on a cheap box.

Really appreciate this conversation guys. Things that seem obvious but weren't to me and might not have been until I ruined stuff :)

I have a Cat 1 box blade - Woods HB72. It is rated for 40-70 engine HP. Slightly out of spec and very much pushing the limits as the M7040 is a 71 HP at the engine machine.

Likely to be fine but this just adds something else to the list of considerations that I never thought I had to think about that might start favouring a GL4740 over the M even though they are only a couple of thousand apart from each other on the tractor itself.

I have a Kodiak 7' rake which is DEFINATELY not something I would be pulling behind a large tractor except for maybe grading on the top or something. its pretty light and my L3400 has managed to break a couple of the tines on it quite easily. Of course the place I use it - my pole barn - will not fit a M7040 anyway and so the rake will have to be used by my MF 255.

A friend is trying to get me to try a rino 15 ft fold up cutter with my m7040, he says it handles it well and will flat get the mowing done. Also will cut up under trees etc, what I need, I am interested in looking at.
