I would agree with the heat issues with 90% full, also foaming. If it has a fill level drain hole more often than not the oil level will be about halfway on the ball or rollers on the lower part of the bearing. if the load being transferred changes by 90 degrees ie. bevel gears etc. it would probably need an EP type gear oil.
a real quick way to check for water is a crackle test. by the time it looks muddy the fluid is emulsified with water and is in trouble.
Also like whitetiger said if your using grease a 00 is the way to go anything much thicker will probably just channel.
