Rotary Cutter Gearbox...What to use?

My jd 1517 batwing mower has 4 gear boxes, the vented fill plug has an oil dipstick attached to it.. there are 2 sizes of threads. If you have clearance at your fill hole for a dipstick.. I'd check out one of these... perhaps cut the stick to just be imersed at the correct oil level.. that way if it is low.. no oil will show.. etc.

A cool idea would be to machine a chunk of plexiglass with threads to fit in the level hole and act as a sight glass.

I don't check my mower's oil level with each use. I don't check my truck's engine oil either. It's one thing to check it the first few times and also if you suspect leakage but I would bet that most folks just run it.

If the level check hole were bigger.. say.. 1/2" a sight glass may work.. but at 1/4.. it would be hard to tell... you might be able to add a petcock though..

90 weight is a safe bet. About 90% full is a good guess. As long as it stays water free, you hardly ever need to change it. You'll know if it gets water in it because it gets milky and very stinky.

Do you know the brand and or model? It shouldn't be too hard to track down a manual with that information.

If you fill the gear box 90% full it will run very hot and burn it up. The oil level is always half ways up on the input shaft. Some gear boxs use hyd oil, some use 90#, some 80/90#, some use 0# or 00# or 000# grease and some use grease gun grease. The most common by far is 80/90# or 00#.
