I am thinking that the slip clutch was probably like this one, with male/female splines:

FD1 PTO Slip Clutch-1-3/8 In. 6 Spline | Agri Supply #31951

....and it would have been on the tractor rather than on the cutter (it would fit either place) and whoever left it on the tractor just did not know any better,
just like probably the same person left the top link on the angle blade. I can't see anyone going to the trouble of switching out PTO shafts just to get the clutch.

Regardless, agreed that I need something in the driveline, and the link above is probably the best & easiest solution.

You are probably right. I reckon that one would work for you.

I am not seeing the compbination over-running coupler/slip clutch @ ASC, but did see this, which would be an easy (but not real cheap) fix:

Easier to install than replacing a unversal joint yoke. And, if it should turn out that the PTO shaft has been shortened to the extent that it is now too short for my aplication, the slip clutch might solve another problem.

This is a photo of just one end, but both ends of the shaft are identical:

In fact, I am not sure which end is supposed to be the tractor end, and which end is the cutter end. The cutter gearbox has a splined input shaft identical to the PTO output shaft of the tractor. The cutter gear box input shaft is not smooth.



Neither end yoke on the shaft is set-up for a shear bolt, in the manner that this yoke is:

1486037 6 Lc6 Shear Pin Flange Yoke

This is for a non-shear device application like is on my tedder and on my Cosmo spreader. Both ends are the same so the only question is do you leave it outside in the weather? If so rotate the shaft such that the outer sleeve is up when stored thus keeping water out of the sliding parts.
