Rotary Cutter rotary cutters for heavy brush:

I have a 40hp Kobota tractor. I need a rotary cutter for heavy brush, small trees and some grass cutting for 40 acres of land. I am looking at the Rhino CY60 and the Bush Hog 305. These are five foot cutters. Which would be better and is there another model or brand that would be a better choice?

I would say go for the Bush Hog. From what I have heard from my area seems to be a better cutter overall! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would go with the Rhino -- they make excellent mowers.

The Rhino has a better gearbox. The Rhino also has a faster blade tip speed which should give a better cut. There is nothing wrong with the Bush Hog if you decide to go that route.

I have a L5030 Kubota and I just went with a Bush Hog 286 6' HD cutter. It's built like a tank and cuts fantastic.

Since both cutters are very near equal, I'd price shop this one.
I think you'd be happy with either choice.

40hp tractor? why you foolin' around with a 5' cutter that a high 20ish hp tractor could handle?

You should be able to power up a 6' and have plenty of power left over to ring out a few shear bolts pretty darn easilly...

Rhino GR60 can chew up 4" diameters.
Or, the LJ60 - 6" diameters!

I like mu older Servis CY72, but watch the weight if your looking at a 3pt model instead of pull type. I got mine from a guy who traded his JD utility for a TC35 and said it made steering an adventure with the Cyclone mounted. HD cutters are heavy and the weight is well aft of the tires.

Are you planning to mow your 4 acres once, twice, or half a dozen times a year?

When I cleared my 10 acres, I thought I needed a heavy duty brush hog. I didn't foresee the fields ever being tamed. But now, all I really need is a finishing mower.

If you could get rid of the bad brush 1 time without buying a cutter, then all you would need would be a light or medium duty. Your tractor will probably just pull a 5' HD cutter, but will pull a 7' standard duty. With 40 acres to cut, I think I would be looking for WIDTH! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The routine cutting for the three acres is to cut fern. The forty acres is quite a job. I am getting a front end root rake to dig some palmettos and small trees also.
