LBrown:

I intend to load the tank into a pickup bed and fill at the local Irving; unload the filled tank at home.

I go thru about 5 gal / week or so. Volume is not that great.

Unloading a 55 gal. drum sounds challanging since its tall and would need hooks welded.

Th main reason for a tank and rotary pump is to avoid an accident - i.e. the L4310 fuel inlet is atop the hood; scrambling up the tire and loader arms w/ a 5-gal. can isn't fun in winter.

Regarding the non-electric pump; I see it as convienent, but another device that needs power.

I appreciate all the comments - keeps one thinking about alternate ideas.

1*Are you going to fill it there with off road fuel ?
One of the reasons I built my set up was to make it practical / feasible to obtain off road fuel.
There are only 2 stations around here that sell off road at the pump .
One is 25 mile south of me the other 27 miles west.
Now that I have the set up I can call the distributor and they will stop by when in my area or driving by my place and fill the empty 55 gallon drum with off road.
This avoids / gets around the minimum delivery policy.
Even If I had to take the drum to a distributor to fill with off road they are only about 5 miles away.
Sure beats 25 to 27 miles.
2* 5 Gallon a week is 260 gallon a year enough to meet the 250 gallon minimum delivery !
5 gallon a week is about 21.66 gallons per month way more than the 10 to 12 gallon a month I use.
3*That's why I use my pump to empty the drum .The only drums I handle are empty ones.
4*Other reasons I built the rig was for convince and to avoid handling those awkward heavy 5 gallon cans.
5*Cans and funnels are never fun even the 2 gallon ones.
6*My elect pump gives the battery charger that was setting around taking up space in the garage doing nothing something to do.
7*Like I said more than one way to skin a cat.
Can never have to many ways to solve a problem.

The surest way I know to need to take fuel to the tractor or other machine is to have a fix fuel fill site. :D

Find you a small used trailer that sit low to the ground to haul your 20 or 55 gallon tank in. If you buy when I do the tanks are empty then fill them before you unload if you must unload.

I still use the ole 5 gallon gas can types when needing a little fuel along and along rather than filling my 150 tank and the fuel getting old. Remember diesel fuel is not something that needs to sit around.

Like you and most others my first inclination was to make the rig portable with the idea of transporting it to the tractor to fill the tractor.
This thought stuck in my mind until it dawned on me it was a lot simpler to drive the tractor to the rig.

1*Why ; How could that be.?
2*I just haul my empty drum in my pick up to get it filled if needed but I haven't had to do that as I have home delivery.
No trailer to have to hookup and unhook.
3*I unload the drum with the set ups pump as I don't want to haul it around every where I go in the truck an would not want it setting around on a trailer.
4*Even if I was going to use 5 gallon cans I'd haul them and empty/unload them the same wayI do a drum.
5*If you are using 5 gallon cans because you don't use enought to warrant filling the 150 gallon tank why do you need the tank?

I just came across a nice 105 gallon fuel tank and Fillrite 12volt pump with filter and hose assemble that I plan to put up on my Arkansas farm location. Many of you guys have talked about bacteria growth in tanks algae etc. I must admit that I have been out of the stored fuel loop other than gasoline for lawnmower and overwinter fuel prep of any gasoline in my boat tank, but 35 years ago when I still lived and worked on a farm, we never had any problems with algae in our tanks. We had 1000 gallon uprite gravity feed tanks for filling our tractors and we would once a month drain off fuel from the low end (we kept the hose end about 3" higher than the drain end) to get rid of any condensate that might have formed. The tanks basically set unused from November to March and we changed the filters whenever the flow slowed down. The filters also had a water drain cock on them so if any water got into them we could drain that off also. I think that if you keep the water out of your tanks, you reduce or eliminate the algae possibility. Plus these were steel tanks and no light could get in. Dont know if that made a difference or not.

What did that set you back.
Sounds like a nice out fit.
