How do we know for sure how old the tires are when we buy them to begin with?
Do they have a date of birth/manufacture on them?

Sorry, wasn't trying get your dander up. Yes, I did see that you put them out of the sun. My point is that no matter where tires are stored, they have a finite lifetime. When I buy tires, I check the code, which I see you have been given a link to, to determine how old the tire is when I buy it. I don't take anything that is more than a few months old. If you find a "new" tire on the shelf at your tire store with a date code that shows it to have been made three years ago, that's still three years out of its life expectancy, so is a three year old tire.

I replace my tires every two years regardless of the mileage on them. Off they go and into the back shed well out of direct sunlight. My theory is that when I retire I will not be able to afford new tires but I can run on the old ones for an extra 2-3 years each set. I have 4 complete (5 tire) sets, so right now if I was to retire I can run on two year old tires for 8-12 years plus the set I currently have on.

One problem I can see with that like in my case tire sizes vary so much with different vehicles now. I had a car with 13" tires for 15 years but then sold that and got a car with 14" tires then 5 years later the car I have now is 17" and who knows what the next size will be. I would use them up before they get 8-10 years old or your vehicles change to where they are no good for anything. Selling used tires is almost like giving them away. I have no clue how many miles you put on a year but am curious, but in my case it is about 6000 miles.

In five years, your two year old set of tires behind the shed will be seven years old. Time does not stop for aging on tires.

I agree. They don't hold up like they used to. I have a feeling your going to end up with a shed of junk.

As for age. No tire store within 50 miles of me will touch a tire older than 6 yrs old except to dismount.

Yes they do. Al must to be DOT approved. I never accept any tire older than 12 months old.

All my tires are on their own rims. They are all 30x9.5x15 Pro-Comp Mud terrains on 8" rims. At almost $2,000.oo CDN after I retire I wont be able to afford tires. That is why I am doing things the way I am.

I haven't bought tires from any place except Discount Tire for several years now. And I know that's true with them. They will also rotate my tires every 6 or 7 thousand miles at no charge, will rebalance them anytime I request it, will check the balance every second time they rotate them without my requesting it, and repair any flats at no charge.

Why not just set aside money for tires and other vehicles expenses?

If you feel this is in your future, you probably shouldn't retire until later in life. A new set of tires is minuscule compared to other expenses during our latter years.

I rotate mine when I install the winter tires at the end of September. Here the winter tires stay on from 1st October through to end of April - legal requirement here. I have a set of spare rims which have the tires mounted on. I make sure the tires are marked as to where I want to put them next time around.

Pretty much the same thing here, except the winter tires don't go on until early November, come off when the snow is pretty much gone in the spring. There is no requirement for winter tires here. Likewise 2 sets of rims for all vehicles.

When I remove them I mark where they came off, and swap front & rear when I put them back. The winter tires I use are directional, so they have to stay on the same side.

Why not use the tires until they are worn out and instead of buying tires 2-3 times more often than you need to invest that money into mutual funds or something and then buy tires with that money in retirement?

Tires do have a finite life even if stored inside. They will dry rot over time.

I rotate the tires on my 4x4 every 6 months. Spare to right rear, right rear to right front and right front to spare. Left side is just front to back.

Interesting. Do you switch to the left in the nect rotation, Or will that Bugger up the direction of rotation pattern?

Your idea would increase the tread life of your tires by 25%, yes?

Since we have winter and summer here, I rotate my tires during the switchover between summer and winter tires in the spring and in the fall.

Since mounting the tires off and on the rims puts a lot of stress on the tires, my winter tires are mounted on their own dedicated steel rims, so all I have to do is undo the lug nuts and switch the whole wheel assembly out.

In terms of longevity, I bought Michelin Latitude X-Ice tires, not only because they have amazing traction on ice, but also because they have a high treadwear rating. Thus, my winter tires are now on their third truck, and still going strong, with lots of tread left and no signs of cracking.

It is interesting that, although my truck's OEM tires have been getting larger in rim diameter, because of changes in profile the actual diameter of the tire has not increased over the years. So, I can still use my 17 inch winter tires even though the summer (All Season) tires that came with my latest (2014) truck are now 18 inch.

I am already planning on working until I drop dead (69 now), but IF sometime in the future I can't work any more for whatever reasons then it would be nice to have a plan B and that is what the tires are for.

I think you should adjust your plans. 69 comes soon enough, some will say too soon. You might want to try to beat the average and die at 83 instead.

Technally I am past 69 now, born in September 1946. My plan is to drop dead in the year 2045. That plan is called Freedom 99.:laughing:

This is the best answer, IMO.

My truck's original tires were Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP and gave me 100,000 miles. I replaced them with identical new ones and got 110,000 miles. In both cases there was still a fair amount of tread left but the sidewalls were starting to crack and rot. The current set of tires has the same name but Uniroyal has since changed their tread/groove design and they are not the same as the old Tiger Paws. I'm hoping they last for the rest of my truck's life - currently 20 years old and 230,000 miles.
