Most if not all diesel engine rated oils are also multi spec'd as gas oil. Check the API logo the next time you get Rotella T. I think you will find that in addition to being CJ-4 rated it is also either SL or SM automotive rated.

According to my bottles it is SM rated, and CJ-4

Ok, well i'm informed more again....I didn't know it carried a "S" rating.....Actually I had a quick moment in Wal Mart tonight and I glanced at most of the name brand oils like Castrol, Quaker State, Pennzoil, and even the Wal Mart Super Tech and all the ones I picked up were rated SM except Pennzoil, including the Super Tech. Sooooooo inform me guys.....if this API rating on these are all the same why not buy the cheapest??? Are they not all basically the same oils???? Or are there different additives in these different brands and where do we go from there to know the best?

I don't think I've seen the Energy Saving tag on any of those diesel oils that are also rated for gas engines.

So while I think they won't hurt anything, you may be giving up some fuel mileage using them. If so, an Energy Saving 'S' rated oil would be a better choice.

Rotella is what is termed an "All Fleet Motor Oil".

for a private individual operating one vehicle, he can afford to buy a specific lubricant for each vehicle.

For a large fleet with a mix of vehicles, engine brands and transmissions and varying levels of competency and cognitive ability of the personnel who install these lubricants into the vehicles they maintain, it is known to be a bonus to have one oil that works in all the holes. That way "Nobody" can mix the stuff up.

You'll find places that use Rotella or Delo in their automatic transmissions. You see the Allison C4 rating on Rotella, it also goes in Auto trannies, while also going in all the engines they own.

FWIW, the Energy Conserving label is only used on motor oils Rated in 5W-30 or !0W30 and they also have to carry the Starburst Symbol. that says "For Gasoline Engines".

They ARE NOT "all the same oil"...but they do pass all the same TESTS! One might be "pure dino"...another might be syn/dino blend..and a 3rd might be nothing more than "monkey snot"...BUT..they all pass the same testing program.

The "best" is all relative..and who can really say which BRAND is "best"....but as long as you use an oil that EXCEEDS the machines requirements..."good enough".

I think I'll grab the one that has the coolest looking bottle for the price with a good rating and just use it in everything!

As long as it's the correct viscosity. :)

:D

I remember, back in the day, using Pennzoil Racing Oil in my pickup, because they had those snazzy silver/red cans.

Every time I read the oil posting I think of an incident that happened years ago. I moved into a newly opened housing develipment that had previously been a farm. One nice spring day I was out walking around and walked onto the farm property. I walked upon an elderly gentlemen changing the oil in his tractor. In the conversation he related that he had retired from farming and sold some of the property and my house was located where he used to raise tobacco. The conservation continued and he related prior to becoming a farmer he had owned three or four service stations. I forget the exact number. After becoming frustrated at this he turned to farming. I in the conservation asked what kind of oil he was using. His reply was "Well sir after owning the service stations I found there are three thing you do not discuss, 1.) religion 2.) politics and 3.) the type and kind of oil used in a vehicle." His reasoning and theory being everyone has a different opinion and what you were using would be wrong. I never did find what kind of oil he was using.
